Has anyone ever been kicked out of dental school for not making the grade? Do you know anyone who was? I heard many people get kicked out in their 1st or 2nd year of dent school.

I don’t understand, why would a person who worked so hard to get to 1st or 2nd year of dent school be kicked out. Shouldn’t dent school help the student instead of kicking them out? Would the student get 2nd chance if that ever happens? Just wondering because it will be like 10x harder compare to undergrad.

yes, very very few students get kicked out. the school usually tries to help the student in any way they can because it has invested in him/her. but some cannot make it. u must understand that dental school is not like undergrad, so those who did well in undergrad are not necessarily gonna do well in dental school. when a dental school kicks a student out, one can neither blame the students nor the school. i strongly feel that if one is not a good match for dental school, then the whole dental medical career might not be for them

The Following info you can get from your Dean as it is collected and monitored by the ADA:

On avg, 10% of dental students will not make it past first year. Every year after that it drops. If I recall, 88% of students that enter graduate. So that means about 540 students that entered do not get their degree

I'm sure in a few of those cases, it's not so much that the students couldn't make the grade, but rather they just decided dentistry wasn't for them and chose to leave.

At least this is what I was told happened to a couple students at VCU last year.

some of these students dont drop out for performing poorly. when i went to my UOP interview, they told me this one guy dropped out because of family emergencies and another guy dropped out because he owned a lucrative restaurant on the side and he could afford to.

Shouldn't you worry about getting into dental school before finding ways to get out?

Don't worry, the only way you will be kicked out of dental school will be because of yourself, If you don't take advantage of the help they provide if you struggle academically. The school will do everything its power to make sure you pass, it will look bad on them if you don't.

Of course some people leave dental school, however from what I hear it is usually related to them not really wanting to be a dentist. If you go out partying every night and never study, then of course you are going to fail. But if you study regularly, seek help when you need it and are proactive about your education, I highly doubt there would be any problems.

Of course a school wants you to succeed, pass and graduate. If you drop out after a year, they have just lost 3 years of tution which is completely irreplaceable (unless they have advanced standing dentists, but only a few schools do).

I did not ask for specifics, but the ADA does track how many leave and how many just simply fail out.

Check your local dental school library since many carry all ADA published material. Also, check the ADA website since you can probably buy the stats directly from them.

So we do not have to guess how many fail or or leave for other reasons, the ADA has the info.

At my school, they to kick lot of people out. They to kick in 1st year and 3rd year and 4th year out. They to be crazy. Univ of CT is to be crazy.

This is very true. It is always a choice the student makes. If someone really wants to do well and tries, there's no way you can fail (since the school will do everything they can to keep you afloat, and if you still fail many will let you remediate.) If you fail enough classes that you have to take an entire year over, a determined student will still choose this over dropping out.

So if someone truly fails out, it is a conscious choice he/she makes and will hopefully withdraw before that happens. There are also some people who inevitably need to leave for personal reasons.

That sounds fair enough.

Admissions Committees are very careful when picking applicants, and they try to ensure that those they choose are prepared to handle dental school! Occasionally it does happen that someone will choose to drop out because it wasn't a good fit for them or they get kicked out because they couldn't handle the program. But the blame shouldn't be on the school because that's more or less a reflection of that particular individual. Overall, I think schools do a pretty good job of picking competant applicants in the first place, but they can't choose perfectly 100% of the time! There's always that margin for error.

Your cross dressing camel is pretty hot. 😉

Thank Goosestuff for that...😎 God, I don't even remember how it came up but I asked for volunteers to sexify the camel, and she was kind enough to prettify me! 😀 I lerf it. I'm all humpy.
