Thinking of getting married during my intern year (pediatrics) - the problem is I'm currently a 3rd year med student, and I need to figure out if it's feasible before I match! If it's not feasible we migh try to do it at the end of my 4th year.

So the question is: is it possible to get married during intern year? Is it possible to get that kind of vacation time? Thanks!

My understanding is it's not uncommon. Most programs have 2-3 weeks of vacation during intern year, generally split into one week chunks. You can make specific requests for weeks off if you have a good reason--ie wedding, major family event, etc.

That said, you'd never have more time to plan something like this than you would during the spring of your 4th year of med school 🙂

It's possible- I know my program will let you request to have a week off at end of one eligible rotation then the first week of next rotation (only certain rotations let you have vacation) but I would do 4th year- soooo much easier!

Between 4th year and intern year is definitely easier (when my fiance and I will be getting married), but I interviewed at a number of programs that allow you to take (or require you to take) your vacation in two week blocks. And one program I know of (Miami children's Hospital) requires you to take your intern year vacation all at once so you would easily be able to do it then.

definitely doable, but another vote for 4th year/right before intern year. That way you can go in fresh and focused and ready to make the transition, without wedding stress.

Never mind

I'm an intern and I have married for 2 weeks. It's doable, but if you have the time to do it beforehand, I'd recommend it. Luckily, I had newborn nursery the 2 weeks before the wedding, so it was a fairly relaxed rotation that allowed me to tie up some loose ends. I then had 2 weeks off for honeymoon/fixing up the apartment.
If you do decide to wait until intern year, consider a coordinator/planner. Best 1000 bucks I spent, because she kept things on track (especially when I was in the NICU).
