I am currently a chemistry pre-med student at my undergrad institution. I am currently at an REU (Research Experience for Undergrads, 10 week program) doing research and I absolutely love it. This experience combined with other factors has made me want to pursue a dual degree. But at this time, I don't have any clinical experience and this REU is the first time I've done research. I have 105 volunteer hours recorded with my university doing random volunteer work and will probably have more by the end of my junior year. I plan on taking my MCAT in the late spring and apply for medical schools starting in June; I've been studying for it outside of research at the REU, about an hour a night, and plan on continuing to study in the fall and spring. I currently have a 3.6 GPA which I will hopefully raise to around a 3.7 with good grades in the fall and spring. I've had two jobs my entire college career (I have to pay for college myself)- in the fall, I will be working at the fitness center and as the head of an organization.
Pretty much, I feel very overwhelmed. I don't believe I have the time needed to make myself a competitive applicant. I'd like to make the best use out of my time, so I wanted some feedback on what I should do.
I plan on taking 12 hours in the fall. I'm going to start research with one of my favorite professors (I've already talked to him about it). I was accepted to a program at our local hospital which allows you to work in the hospital four hours a week which also allows you to shadow on some days (so I should get around 60 hours by the end of the fall hopefully). I also will apply to volunteer at a local hospice. I would like to shadow some md/phd's but I go to college in the middle of nowhere and the nearest one is about an hour away. I'd like to do another REU next summer, but would be willing to sit out and get more clinical experience for the rest of the summer If it would improve my chances.
Should I do additional shadowing outside the hospital work, and should I do anything in addition to all of this?
