Hi everyone.
So I've been at this lab for nearly a year and the PI is giving me permission to start my own project. While it sounds great, I will have very little guidance given that no one in my lab has worked in this area of research before (what my project will be related to). So it will basically be just me. I've done a similar exp in a different lab before so for me, the protocol will be pretty straightforward but given that I will be heading this mostly on my own...I am a little daunted. Should I go for it and is it worth it? :/

Of course it's worth it! Med school adcoms will love to see a student working leading his or her own project. And (possibly more importantly) it gives you a chance to grow on a personal level as well. I can see why it's a bit daunting to run a project without any guidance, but that's exactly what it means to take on more responsibility, and sooner or later you are going to have to learn to be able to work independently. This is a great chance to learn that. And obviously you will learn a lot about the field of interest as well. Go for it. 👍

Absolutely!! The only reason why my research experience was so great was because it was my own. It's intimidating but you really learn a lot from it.
