I'm referring to the "explain any bad grades and Ws" prompt.

I did horribly my freshman/sophomore years of undergrad. The primary reason being that I was a dumb kid who never studied in High School and did fine and thought that would work for college. I also kept taking 5-6 classes a semester thinking that the goal was just to "finish fast."

The second reason I did poorly was that I had an abusive older bf at the time whom I broke up with during the end of my freshman year. I filed to get a restraining order against him and the dude kept evading the police. So I spent most of my freshman/sophomore years in court, refiling the order (in my state it expired 30 or 60 days from filing if it wasn't served) and he kept evading being served, so I was in court re-filing multiple times until they finally found him. Also in my state, if you want to have someone served, you need to contact the police and wait with them while they serve the order. So... lots of hours wasted outside of this dude's home + in court when I should've been studying. I was also briefly homeless due to the breakup.

I had an upward trend junior and senior year but still had one W senior year because I didn't learn my lesson and tried to take too many classes again.

I wasn't planning on mentioning the crap with my ex in the secondary since it was so long ago (I graduated and did an SMP + gap year since then) but after watching a lot of Dr. Gray videos and hanging out on r/premed, I see a lot of people get really personal in their applications? I thought this was a bad thing but it's the honest answer. Should I mention the issues with my ex or should I stick with "I was a dumb kid" trope? I trust y'all more than reddit lol.

Because you spent so much time in court, and were so stressed by this experience, it’s definitely worth mentioning. You don’t need to say more than you said here.
