M4 student here applying for internal medicine.

I'm currently doing a sub-internship at hospital A. One of my attendings is very fond of me. He has even given me a solid verbal recommendation to the program director of the residency program at hospital A (where he is a faculty member).

But the #1 program on my rank list is at hospital B.

Should I ask my attending to call the program director at hospital B and offer a recommendation?

I feel I am fairly close to this attending, having taken another rotation with him even before this sub-i.

Trying to figure out the appropriateness of a non-program director (but still a faculty attending) giving a phone call to a program director at another program.

I wouldn't. would be different if hospital A didn't have a program.

If hospital A didn't have a residency program, then the attending in question wouldn't be a faculty member working with residents everyday. Such an individual likely is more credible to a random program director than an attending at a community hospital.

I think it would depend on the situation. If your attending knows the program director at program B or has asked you about where you want to end up, then I think it'd be fine. Seeing as he already put in a verbal recommendation for you at your his home program, I wouldn't ask him to make verbal recommendations to other places unless he offers. Just ask for a letter, if he thinks as highly of you as it seems he'll write you a pretty glowing recommendation.

Um match day is 40 days away. I don't need nor can I use a letter.

If your attending doesn't have any connections with the PD at hospital B I'm not sure it'll make much of a difference.
