Hey guys/gals,
So I'm beginning to get a little anxious. Already applied to osteopathic internships but am applying to 42 PM&R programs come Sept 1.
IMO... I really think that you would be wasting a lot of time and money applying to that many programs. See below..
A little about myself -- Ranked in the middle 50% of my class, COMLEX Step 1 480, COMLEX Step 2 taking next monday.
-You're a DO, a neutral factor at worst in the overwhelming majority of PM&R programs
-Your grades are right around average... PM&R is becoming more competitive, but this still ain't derm or plastics. That shouldn't be a real big red flag on your application (vs failing boards, courses, etc). Class grades are done...step 1 is done... try to improve a little on Step 2, but +/- a few points of the avg shouldn't take you out of the running for the majority of programs.
Had rehab interest throughout undergrad, worked as a prosthetist assitant in undergrad.
-Solid evidence of prior interest and relevant exposure to the field
I have done 2 rotations in PM&R - 1 outpatient and the other inpatient (SCI, MSK) at Mt Sinai (NYC). Will be doing one more rotation at NYU Rusk in October.
-3 PM&R rotations shows a strong interest in the field...definitely a plus.
Currently have 4 LoR (2 PM&R, 1 Peds and 1 IM). I don't know if I'm going crazy yet but I hope applying broadly will be fine. My rotation at Mt Sinai was excellent - worked with PD as well and got great feedback.
-Good work, another positive part of your app here (unless Dr. Herrera was just bs'ing you...jk)
But I don't want to limit myself as I definitely want to match somewhere.
Will I have a decent shot at many programs? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
- I really do think that you have a decent shot at many programs. Sure, you may not be a lock on the short list of "elite" programs, but you never know. Search this forum for the programs that repeatedly get listed somewhere in the very good->great category. There are probably 20 or so on that arbitrary list and there are many less-mentioned programs that offer solid training. 40 really does seem like way to much for you. 20 would even be pushing it IMO unless you're really not revealing a glaring negative component of your application (or you're just a total d-bag...
😉 )
Best of luck
