Hey all, first post here.

I am a senior at a top private school with a strong gpa and am considering postbac programs. My main concern right now for developing a good med school app is getting science research experience. With someone with minimal science background, how do I get research experience? Would it be possible to get any significant research experience if I did a 1-year program? Or would I be better extending my postbac program to 2-years for this purpose? I'm not taking into account glide year opportunities as they would be after my med school applications.

Also, I do have a bit of research experience dealing with behavioral econ; don't know if that counts.

(I should have decent medical volunteer experience for my med school apps.)

Thanks in advance 🙂

Apply for a job as a 'research coordinator' or something with that type of name and then work your way in gradually to some hands=on research.

Keep in mind, though, you don't need to do any research to get accepted to medical school, especially if the rest of your application is strong. Any research you do during your postbac year won't be more than a few hours per week, anyway, and that's not intense enough to produce anything impressive.

The research experience may help with your med school application depending on where you are applying; some schools like to see it, some don't care one way or the other. If you want that experience, maybe you should look at some of the post bacs and SMPs that include research as part of their curriculum (SIU MEDPREP, Boston U. SMP, Touro-Nevada MS Medical Health Sciences, and several of the MS Medical Science programs at the University of South Florida)...
