I'm an IMG (unfortunately Canadian) currently in PGY1 at a community program. I aspire to complete a hematology/oncology fellowship one day... however, there is hardly any research at my program.
I have a couple of publications and currently involved in a QI program. However, I'm not sure how else to increase my chances for fellowship in the future.

Is it highly unorthodox to contact other university programs requesting an opportunity to do research. Problem with that is it would basically virtual unless I find a program nearby, and even then my intern year is VERY wards/ICU based and wouldn't have much time to travel.

I would very much appreciate any and all insight. Thank you

Some programs (including mine) allows us to do a 1 month away rotation at other universities and work with their faculty/get LORs/research. You really need to talk with your PD/PC. From what I've been told, your program is "paying" for you to rotate there and work for them for free since they're not going to stop paying your salary for that month.

If you are on a J1 visa, the new rules regarding Statements of Need might make it impossible for you to do a fellowship in hematology & oncology.
