Hey all!

I have a few questions regarding this topic. Currently, I've been accepted to a DPT program in Texas and will begin in the fall. Because my significant other lives in Canada, my plan is to eventually move there. I'm curious what type of process I will have to go through in order to practice in Canada. Because I am using student loans to pay for PT school, I will owe the US federal government a lot of money.

I understand that in order for me to work in Canada, I would have to apply for the Ontario Internationally Educated Physical Therapy Bridging Program (OIEPB). That program alone takes 9 months. Then I will become eligible to take their national licensure exam.

I'm curious if are any others who have been in this situation or have any advice to offer on what I am able to do.

Thanks!

Following, because my significant other is also Canadian and we miiiiiiiiiiight eventually relocate there.

@turtlot - keep in mind that the PT salaries will be significantly lower in Canada (an average of like $50K USD and as low as $30K according to PayScale? Someone chime in).

Ahh! I am so glad I am not the only one curious about this 🙂

@Phyline, I completely agree. I would also want someone to chime in about salaries for PT's in Canada. I'm not sure how universal healthcare and physical therapy work in Canada. I would really appreciate the help! I also posted this exact post in the International Forum-Canada section.

I looked this up out of curiosity (not Canadian), but I think your numbers are a low. I'm seeing very similar means to US wages although larger ranges. Most I'm reading are 60-90k annually with a mean of about 75k, although this also seems to be heavily dependent on location as it is here.

My thoughts exactly. I was looking into the salary after posting this that many PT's in Canada make roughly the same as US PT's.

I also found a ton on information on how I would be able to practice PT in Canada. According to The Alliance (The organization that regulates practicing physiotherapists in Canada), the education Americans receive here should meet the standards set by the Alliance. So I believe that those educated in the US could apply through The Alliance, they would determine if the education we received here meets their standards, and then we would be eligible to take the national licensing test. Here is the link if anyone is curious: http://www.alliancept.org/credential_scp_unitedstatesofamerica.php

I hope this helps!

Are your numbers in USD or in CAD? I should look into this a bit more, because I thought it was 60K CAD which is like 47K USD, which is kind of low.
