Hi Docs, i will be starting my im residency in community affiliated to uni. program. i want to go for gastro fellowship later on. i am fmg with average credentials. i had few questions regarding gi
1- it seems u r suppose to apply for gi in 2nd year of im. why is that? cant u apply in 3rd year or after that? is there any waiting period if u apply after 2nd year?
2- how to go abt for research? i will be doing my electives in 2nd year is it too
late?
3- my usmle step scores r average but i want to compensate that by research and good lors. is that enough???

i am bit naive for all these stuff so will appreciate your reply. thanx

if you apply in second year and match, you will start fellowship right after third year,u can apply in third year and later, but you will have a wait period before you start fellowship. Most fellowship positions start the process 16-18 months ahead of starting the position.GI is competitive, you should probably start working on your appl right from intern year, start research ,take multiple electives in GI,show scholarly aptitute, case reports, abstracts, posters etc.Usually univ pgms tend to take their own grads for GI,so you should really aim to get good LORS from PD[best resident],LORS from research and GI.gl
