Hey everyone. I have a question about giving a gift to a proctor.

This proctor I speak of is the proctor for my Animal Nutrition course at Purdue. She was responsible for printing my exam that I had my professor sent to her, supervising me for the one (2 for the final) hours for my exams (3 total) while she works the circulation desk at the library, and then mailing & faxing my exam back to my professor. I gave her $2 for postage each time. She has not charged me for this service and has graciously been flexible with rescheduling exams due to sickness, etc.

Anyway, I was going to give her a little gift, maybe a gift card to a variety of restaurants or something, to thank her for her time. Any thoughts about this? Is this appropriate? Any ideas for a gift? Am I going overboard?

Thanks for any advice!🙂

It's a nice thought, but I would just give her a hand-written thank-you note instead of a gift. She was just doing her job.

I agree with Marsala. A gift would be a bit over the top, but a nice thank-you note is very appropriate.

I agree. A note would be great. Maybe you could make a donation to the library too? At the one where I take my exams, they have an adult learning center that pays the fees for qualified candidates to take the GED. It costs them $50 to cover GED costs for one student, so that's what I send them each term.

Thanks for the advice! I always do things over the top, hence the needed feedback! Hand-written letter it is!🙂

I don't think it is over the top, but it could be seen as inappropriate (someone somewhere might see it as bribery) so hold off until all documentation/transcripts are finalized or stick to a TY note. Also, folks don't think about it, but when you get in, it can be really nice for folks like this to get another TY note that shows how providing the service helped (makes a great justification for costs when budget cuts are made.)

I love the idea of a donation to the organization/library/etc.
