Hey guys,

So I've been searching the internet for some ideas to give my "professional mentor" if you will, and have come up with nothing great. Basically, without getting into too many details, this guy hooked me up with an awesome research publication that will hopefully help me open up a few more doors for residency. We have a good, solid professional relationship; not buddy-buddy, but definitely a "hey, whatsup" to me and a response of "hey Dr. X"

I wanted to get something professional but not too kiss-ass. Initially I was thinking wine, but thats kinda weird, and then I was thinking a nice bottle of scotch, but that may be inappropriate. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

I am actually in a similar boat with the dentist I shadowed - great guy and has done alot for me.

I know he likes cognac, so i'll be buying him a bottle to indulge in. A bottle of liquour to a health professional isn't unappropriate (unless he's an alcoholic, which i would image would be somewhat of an issue 😕)

You think that a bottle of liquor is inappropriate to give to someone who works in health care? As long as you are not buying the your average local drunks paper bag special and you know that the person enjoys that particular flavor...I think it is ok. Maybe a little over the top though. A fine scotch or cognac would be very expensive. You may want to give a decent bottle of wine. However, you know your mentor better than anyone on here, what do you think he or she will appreciate most?

When I mentor some one, all i hope for is that they will help someone in the future. In fact gifts embarrass me. I do it because I am an educator.

Yes I have received gifts, wine or something sweet - chocolate or cake... but knowing i helped some one is a reward in itself....

Dr. Ram - you are truly a leader and it's inspiring to know there are ppl out there like you willing to help out. True asset to our profession, thanks!!

I brew beer, so I gave some to my mentor. (it's not as classy as fine wine or cognac but it's something I actually made so it's gotta mean more right? ha) Also, I treated him to lunch a few times.

Just suck up constantly and quote some good Donald Trump from "the apprentice." Your mentor will appreciate knowing that you understand the way the world works.
