Gift for student host

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You really can't give a gift to a person you've just met and that you'll only know for one night. If you want to show your appreciation, a thank you card (or E-card) sent after your interview would be the most appropriate I think.

box of chocalate/cookies/nuts.

NO student can refuse food. 😀

Who says you can't form a deep relationship in a one night stand? Just kidding. I think I'll just recommend a thank-you card, cause a gift may send a message that you didn't mean to convey...😉

take them out to dinner

I was thinking about that, but I don't get in till like 9:30. I'm thinking maybe a little snowglobe or something and a thank you card will be nice.

hungry? then a nice dinner

late night? then a nice bar for drinks

doesnt like alcohol? then a nice dvd from best buy will suffice.

no dvd player? then a thank you card will have to do.

has no address? then where the hell did you stay?

out.

I'm interviewing for residency and have been getting my hosts a $20 box of good truffles from a local chocoalte maker. I figure it's an inconvenience to them and they're saving me big hotel dollars. So don't be too stingy but don't be over the top either. I've also given good local coffee beans if I know they drink coffee.

If you are getting in early, dinner.......because 1) you'll see the area 2) they'll tell you a lot about the school

If you are getting in late, don't worry about it. The person will spend time talking to you about the school, but it will probably be in much more of a compressed way, than a long conversation where random thoughts can come to mind.......at least that is the way I do it..........we do host people because we like it and hope to help you out.........however, if we're taking you out to see the town, I don't think it should cost us anything out of the pocket (most hosts aren't going to take you to an expensive place.......the last place I took a guy cost $11 for both of us.....).......

In the end, basically, the host should just be offering a place to stay and shouldn't incur any costs from hosting you (except water and heat).

Just my $.02.

Yes gift!

The snow globe sounds nice, but the chockies and coffee sound good too. Anything on the generous side and unexpected is a good bet. I plan to bring something for my host at my next interview. We have a great hand made chocolate shop down the street, so that might be what I buy.
