This will be airing on Feb. 7th @ 8pm on TNT.

Cuba Gooding Jr., who I hate with a passion, will be playing Dr. Carson, but I'll be tuning in anyway.

Will you? 😀

YEs ma'am I will be in front of the tv. I read the book and it was awesome. Dr. Carson is a cool guy. I also got to see him speak at the SNMA national conference in 2004 in New Orleans. Looking forward to it! How are you doing Ms. KrispyKreme?

The guy is an inspiration. He spoke at my school last year. He's very funny, wise, down to earth, and willing to take cheesy pics lol. Ill watch if i can. This yr the mexican american nuerosurgeon @ hopkins hospital will speak. Im looking 4ward to it

Yes, I will be tuning in. Loved the book🙂 , he is an inspiration to alot of young african doctors.

Me too, But I will tune in.

^5.

I'm glad that someone else shares my disgust for that tap-dancing idiot. I'll bump this thread the day prior to remind everybody to tune in. Afterwards, we can discuss it. :meanie:

I wonder if Dr. Carson has any idea of the large # of African Americans that he has inspired to become physicians. If it wasn't for him or Dr. Huxtable 🙂laugh🙂, I don't know if being a doctor would've been something I seriously considered.

I'm doing pretty good, BD2B! How are you? Has Howard mailed your acceptance letter yet? 😀

probably not..

i've read just about every book that he's published, and am very, very familiar with his story. i 😍 ben carson, but w/all due respect, don't think i'd be interested in seeing a film about him.

That would be Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, M.D. He's overcome some very tough times to achive his dream.

I like Cuba (at times) but I don't see him playing Ben Carson. I think they should have gotten a fresh face to play Ben Carson instead (I can't really picture any celebs playing him). But either way, I'll definitely be tuning in bc he's my hero!!

Don Cheadle, perhaps?

Yea, actually I take it back MsKrispyKreme, I can see Don Cheadle or Denzel Washington playing Ben Carson.

Also, I don't know how many of you watch Hopkins on the We TV station but its about the lives of the Hopkins residents and medical students (a couple of them at a time) and Ben Carson makes a cameo or two in a few episodes when it is one of his cases that is being shown.

I managed to catch the end of that show once but never could find it again🙁. When does it come on? And I will definitely be watching the movie, although I don't think it can come anywhere NEAR the book!

Yes, most definitely. I think Forest Whitaker would have been my choice for the Ben Carson role, irrespective of their differences in physical appearance of course. That guy is a great actor.

It comes on Tuesdays at 10pm/9c on We TV.

I can't wait to watch this movie! It was filmed in Detroit (the D)!

Also, a coworker of mine is an extra in the movie! She plays a pediatric nurse, I think.

I am with you on this one. Forest Whitaker could carry off Carson without "batting an eyelash". Besides, what's stage make-up for?? 😉

njbmd, I must say you're def my favorite moderator. I read your blog post on "venting" and I like it 😀. You should think about writing a memoir, I would certainly buy it.

Careful now, I might get a "swelled head" but thanks for the compliment. 🙂

On another note, I have seen the photos of Cuba Gooding Jr. as Dr. Carson and he has the BC post down. I also remember the chills that I experienced watching Forest Whitaker in The Last King of Scotland. He became Amin in every sense of the word. He is truly a gifted actor among many great African-American actors with extraordinary gifts.

I eagerly await this movie because it's fun to see someone being portrayed that one actually has met and spent some time around. If done correctly, this film should provide a great message for anyone who seeks to achieve a dream. Dr. Carson's books are very inspirational and must-reads for anyone who seeks a career in medicine. He is an awesome writer.

i definitely got to see this! I'll be tuning in.

How the hell did a chump like Cuba Gooding win an Oscar? Just for stupidly and ignorantly shouting "Show me the money" over and over again? William Macy, of Fargo fame, was robbed.

Cant wait to see it..... 5 and a half hours to go....😍

Same here! I'm making all of my younger siblings watch it with me 🙂 Spongebob is going to have to be put on hold for awhile!

😍I don't want to sound like a nerd..but i'm in love with ben carson..as i watch his movie..he's my academic hero...

Just got done watching it. Great movie. Very inspiring.

I liked this movie very much. It was very well done. The young actor that played young Ben Carson was a scene stealer.

The movie was great.. ended in a high note.. wish it hadnt ended.😳

I'm on the west coast so it hasn't come on yet here, but from the reviews so far i'm in for a treat!

am i the only one who thinks they butchered the book/his life??

ok, maybe not butchered, but i thought they could have landed better actors (example: i was watching it with some friends and we agreed the first actor made Ben seem slightly autistic as a child)... and it seemed as though they rushed through some important stuff.. for example, we didn't even see him in medical school lol.

but whatever, still an inspirational story. and i even learned a few new things about dr. carson and his family. 👍

Yeah I hate that they skipped the med school part. I think they thought it would make Ben seem too "normal" if he went to a lowly school like the University of Michigan. 🙄

I like how getting an A in general chemistry instantly equals neurosurgon.

Very moving to say the least, although the plots felt a little rushed. Sort of reminds of "Something the lord made": Its a must see!!!

Sup Kreme, 😉. We cool???

Always. 😉 I take very few things personally.

I saw "Something the Lord Made" a few months ago, and it was VERY good.

I did think the plot was a bit rushed.

I was like, "Is he just balancing an iron reaction?"

We have to remember, they're writing this movie for laypersons. I would've liked more focus on his med school experience, and his relationship with Candy. 😍

It was a great movie!!! Very inspiring...I cried when he talked to the parents after the separation...Haven't cried about a movie in a while..I really connected .
I need to read the book ASAP!!!😀

They made Gen Chem 1 seem so hard lol. They could have a least showed him taking Organic 2 or something. Overall I though the movie was pretty corny. Especially Cuba Gooding Jr.

It was also weird how he tries to kill a guy, the movie cuts to commercial break, and voila now he's in college with no real explanation of how he overcame his temper. Other than holding a bible and singing some hymn.

Yes, he was balancing the oxidation of iron to iron(III)oxide (or rusting). One of the problems of making a 2-hour move about a subject that actually needs about 20 hours is that loads of things are going to need to be left out. This is why DocJolly likely prefers to read his books and leave the movies for others.

The other problem is that the real work is doing extremely well in medical school (no easy task) with consistency over four long years. It's boring but it's crucial. Dr. Carson didn't walk out of the University of Michigan and into Neurosurgery at Hopkins on a whim.

Also left out it the grueling nature of a neurosurgery residency. Often, as a neurosurgery resident, you are the only person with your knowledge on duty at any given time. Sure, you can consult with the attending at home but you are the eye, ears and hands of that attending. You have to both hone your craft and know what you are doing. There isn't anyone around to "bail you out" if you make a mistake. You have to be able to make some decisions and follow up with the hope that you are not wrong because if you are, you have injured a person for life.

They skirted around one particular case, they skirted around the racism of Baltimore (still rampant in medicine and a huge element for him to overcome) and they skirted around the sacrifices that the Carsons (who have a very special relationship) had to make for him to achieve what was needed for this career. It was a 2-hour movie and any of the things that they briefly mentioned, could have filled the 2-hours completely.

I would have loved more of the younger Ben Carson and how he toiled to overcome his academics (not just at the secondary school level) but at the university level to reach the level of scholarship that enabled him to be a strong medical student. They could have left some of the trials of his mother out of this film and focused more on Dr. Carson himself and his mental strength. Most of what we saw was him praying or holding his head.

In all, the movie was good and I liked how it was done but there is enough there for approximately ten movies. Cuba Gooding, Jr. did an OK job with portrayal as it is difficult to portray someone who is living. Definitely Mos Def did a better job with Dr. Vivian Thomas and Alan Rickman was superb as Dr. Alfred Blalock (made him far more heroic that he actually was) but this is the nature of film-making and it's easy to be a Sunday morning movie critic. 😉

Anyone notice that there seemed to be an especially obnoxious amount of commercials in this movie? Even moreso than regular movies on regular cable, it seemed like every five minutes it was back to a commercial break.

I didnt get to watch it. I ended up catching a play in D.C instead (the girl made me 😀) so for those of us who missed it, the movie airs again today (sunday) at 2pm eastern time.
