Doughnuts, pizza, etc. Food always works.

Usually the lab techs just leave that in the kitchen.. and the PIs eat them without knowing who brought it. It would be kind of awkward to just bring those things to them... or you could just casually mention that you bought doughnuts and they're in the kitchen.

Wash her test tubes for her.

How about a gift card to a restaurant or something?

i had a really awesome lab PI....he was very patient with me which was especially nice because it took me a while to get used to working in the lab.

i wanted to get him something nice and memorable so i got him a buildabear teddy dressed in a white lab coat. i know it sounds sorta girly, but the last time i went to see him, i saw that he had it on a shelf in his office.

That sounds like such a memorable gift!

you could get something nice for their home (like an appliance), gift certificate, or maybe something like cologne/purfume. or flowers for a woman.

Visit your nearest Hallmark or See's candy store.

I worked in a lab with a strawberry lady.

Searched high and low for strawberry things, and couldn't find anything beyond dish towels.

Somehow, at the last store my other student tech and I went to, we went down some aisle, and BOOM there was all this strawberry stuff! It helped it was on sale too ;-)

The main lab mentor/the PhD whose lab it was, we gave a ceramic basket cookie/candy jar that was overflowing with strawberries (on the top) filled with candy, and a strawberry platter... along with a picture frame of the other girl and I in it. The candy jar still sits on herr desk. No idea what she does with the platter, but it could be in her home, in her greenhouse or in her lab.

The other lab lady, we gave her a foot spa kit (she's a HUGE runner) as well as a picture frame of me and the other girl in it.

The sweet, wonderful lab volunteer (she's een there maybe 3 months).. I love her so much, and she's newer to the country, but I wanted something nice and ended up going with potpurri and candles in really cool frosted glass flower holders. I actually ran into her at a random gas station the other day,, said her name and we ran to each other to hug. Such a wonderful girl, I miss working with her!!

The build-a-bear is a cute idea!
