This topic was touched on in another thread recently, and it got me wondering.

Do you have to give presentations in dental school as part of your coursework? Like 15-minute ones, or full hour-long seminars? I'd be really interested to hear what it's like at different schools, as well as peoples' personal takes on giving talks in D-school (is it nerve-wracking? is it just plain fun?).

Which leads to my poll for the week 😀 How do you feel about giving presentations?

First, all PBL dental schools are presentation based, in small groups of course! Here at Nova Dental, we have had a couple group presentations in the first two years. Presentations are all Power Point slides. Whether you're comfortable speaking in front of the class, instructors, and other doctors or not, that's up to you. We've had 30-minute group presentations, we've had 1-hour group presentations and I personally have had an hour long presentations. It all depends as far as the length of the presentation goes!

I personally don't mind it as long as I know what I am about to talk about! Public speaking is inivitable in dental school! If you're shy, you better learn to become "unshy" quick!

Wow - I didn't know that about PBL schools (though now that I do know it, it's like DUH, I should've thought so) 😉 That really sounds like an awesome (and effective) approach to learning, because giving a talk means you've got to really know your stuff!

Andy's right, we all have to collaborate to present our PBL research to each other. Also, I've given a half-hour presentation as part of a group, and a ten-minute on my own. It's nothing too strenuous, and the PBL stuff is pretty informal unless your faculty tutor is a complete tool.

i am terrified of giving presentations, please tell me you don't have to do individual talks in dental school!! (group ones are okay.. maybe... i guess.) :scared:

You'll find yourself learning ways to do all sorts of stuff you don't think you'll be able to handle. Try not to sweat it too much, especially this early in the game. 🙂

Once you get a few presentations under your belt, talking infront of large groups will be a breeze. The best defense against any anxiety is to know your topic inside and out.

Call me crazy, but i really enjoy public speaking and sometimes i get asked to do it. I was attending a conference over the weekend during which i attended a workshop where i was chosen to give a 1-2 min debriefing for the whole conference.. well, an hour before my turn, i found that my time was extended to 20 min... so i quickly gathered my thoughts and when i got to the podium, i realized i was delivering a speech!!! they loved it.. i got to answer questions at the end.. additional 7 min or so!! 😀

i will take all that as a yes 🙁 i have done some presentations in undergrad and it only gets worse every time. maybe i will just skip all the presentations and get a C and it will be all good.

If it makes it any easier, it always help to recognize that 90%+ of the people probably aren't even listening to you. This is especially true in a dental school class.

Beautiful, Gavin. It's funny because it's true. 👍

That's not all true Gavin and Bill of Indiana....it depends who's up front giving the presentation....if you're a hot classmate or a popular classmate, then attention is automatically turned to you 100%!

If you're a quiet classmate and kind of doing your own thing most of the time, yes, of course, the whole class will ignore you as sad as it sounds!

Depends who you are.....

I love giving public presentations.

It's another excuse for me to down a couple heinekens 👍

I'd not noticed before that the ad banners have become intelligent (or have they always been?) - for this thread on presentations, about 1/3 of the time the page loads, the ad banner has like 4 links to presentation-related services (it's one of those all-text banners). Yikes! They're listening to us! 😱

You mean before or after? 😉

Well, after the presentation I have no need for an excuse, silly. 😛
