So this is kind of a weird situation but the city I am in has a couple of different hospitals that are well known, specifically two. I go to school at one and the doctors I've seen have usually been at the other. Well, I am pregnant and need to find an OBGYN and my school is better known for its maternity services. I would really like to go into OBGYN and ideally do residency in the same school that I attend now. I tried going to an OBGYN at the other school and he really put me off (kind of a long story).

Do you think it's ok for me to go see an OBGYN at my school even though I'll be rotating through OBGYN while pregnant and applying for residency there? My biggest fear is that I'll be asking questions about things that they think a medical student should know or wanting things that are crazy (natural birth, delayed cord clamping, etc....) and "leave a impression".

Unless you are a high risk patient is there really any need for you to deliver at a "well known" hospital? Surely there are some other nice hospitals in town with fine maternity services and without the stress of potential future colleagues. Not everything needs or should be done at some "brand name" tertiary care center.

I am not high risk but like I said I want a natural childbirth and the two mentioned above mine and the other are the ones known for being natural childbirth friendly. Some of the others have high C-section rates or newborns have to go into the nursery for check ups. That's not the birth experience I want.

There was a study that showed that future offspring get a few points added to their IQ if the mother delivers in a brand name tertiary care center hospital vs. a community-based hospital.

Just make sure you go to a private faculty clinic. I was with an attending once who saw a student for lady issues that were none of my business -- very embarrassing for that student and an ethical situation that I shouldn't have been in. For the labor unit, see what they do for private patients (e.g., do students and such participate in their care).

Perhaps a better situation would be to see if any of the faculty deliver patients at a private hospital and see patients at a private, off-campus office.

I went to my urologist with anal worts and almost matched there, got my top program instead.

I have similar concerns. In my opinion, you need to stick with what you want as a mother, not as a student. You will be a mother for much longer than you will be a student or resident and you want to be happy with your birth experience. If the other hospitals in the area are not natural birth friendly, stick with your intuition. I'd suggest talking to student services at your school and see what they recommend - perhaps they can match you with a physician that you won't have to round or interview with? Remember that, in the end, you are all medical professionals. Your relationship as a patient is not the same as your relationship as a student, and your OB/GYN should respect that. (If you were to be matched with that physician in a rotation, you would probably be more embarrassed, but I doubt that the attending would even remember.) I'm sure you are not the first, nor will you be the last to have this dilemma. Most importantly, if you feel strongly about you decisions for your birth experience, do not let others pressure you out of it. You have your reasons for your choice, and don't be afraid to share those with the people around you (medical professionals or not). Good luck Mommy!

P.S. - Check out MomMD - they might be able to give some more advice on this and other mommy-related things!

I 100% understand both your reasons and your concerns and I would stick with where you want to deliver. I agree with the person right above me about getting more info from your school as well as your doctor. FWIW, when did my Ob/Gyn rotation, both a resident and young attending were pregnant and delivered at the hospital while I was there. People kept their distance.

Just go where you want to go. Request no students so your colleagues won't see your vagina. It is only a vagina after all, there's nothing attractive about it in this situation.
