I'm reading posts about Canadian students coming to the US for dental school. Does it ever work the other way around? Given that there aren't many schools in Canada, is it tons more competitive? I was looking at UBC, but I don't know if it would be a waste of time to even consider it.

You will need very high stats to be considered for canadian schools. And if your not a resident of the BC, you'll need even higher scores to be successful. Truth of the matter is, pretty much every school in Canada only accepts people with Harvard-like statistics.

Is it because, the GPA scale for canadians is 4.5, so therefore easier to get 3.7/8/9.... or simply more out of the student?

no we are on a 4.0 scale just like americans...i have no idea where the 4.5 rumor came from.

The reason why everything is so competitive in canada is because we have very few dental schools and completely no private schools. UBC only takes 4 out of province students, and I'm not sure if that includes international students.

that being said, McGill medicine is one exception- they accept more international students than out of province students! However the requirements are again very high (at least >3.6). i dont think there are any americans in mcgill dent this yr.

it's only more feasible for canadians to go south because of the abundance of private schools in the US. i dont think getting in a state schools would be THAT much easier than getting into a canadian school, especially the more prestigious ones.

oh ya....you will need the Canadian DAT to apply to Canadian schools. They dont accept American DAT (except one school in the maritimes or prairies if i remember right). they're only offered twice a yr so you'll hv to fly up to take it.

so, to be blunt, yes i think you should just forget about applying to canada becuz in all odds you'll get into a american school before a canadian one. 😳

actually......the University of Toronto accepts the American DAT and actually has a couple of spots available specifically for American students (1 or 2)....and since not many American think about applying there, Ive heard of American students getting in with a 3.4-3.5
