Hello,

Quick question for which I could not find a similar thread, how faux pas is it to turn down a research position for which one has already accepted. I accepted one program's offer of a summer position but then unexpectedly got into my top choice. Is this something that is acceptable or is it a major no-no. I haven't filled in any paperwork for the program.

I don't have a definitive answer on this. but..

If you haven't signed anything, then I would just call whoever is in charge of the program and explain that there is a change in plans and you won't be able to take advantage of this opportunity. Be super nice and polite and professional. I wouldn't think you need to explain anything more than "something has come up that will prevent you from entering the research program".

The procedure might be more complicated if you are somehow declared to the program, but you said you never signed anything yet. I wouldn't think from what you describe it would be a huge deal.
