Hey guys,

I'm finishing up residency this year. I'm looking into jobs right now in a specific area and only finding PCP jobs, which I'm alright with doing and enjoy. I'm just wondering, is it ok to transition over to hospitalist after working as a PCP for a year or so? I've seen it commonly from hospitalist-> PCP but usually not the other way around, but my colleagues have a few that have done it.

Thanks

I've seen it from multiple docs. Actually, several of the hospitalists at my hospital work at clinic and the hospital (I know, not the SAME situation you're asking but hear me out). They generally round early in the morning on their hospital patients and then do clinic. Some have even started reducing clinic hours and focusing more on the hospital life. I know my hospital isn't the only one. Seems some just tire of the clinic and enjoy the hospitalist lifestyle.
The only downside I'd see is having your patients find someone else to follow up with at other clinics. I'd imagine you wouldn't just up and leave them high and dry going to the hospital.

Should not be an issue. Consider more traditional jobs such as Kaustikos mentioned. That is what I currently do. Round on my hospital patients in the morning prior to clinic. I am in clinic 4.5 days per week and typically see 1 to 4 of my own patients in the hospital per day
