Hey eeryone 🙂 Im going into medical school and have been seriously interested in EM. I was wondering..., What do they do? Where do they work? How much do they work? And any thing else pertaining to EM.., haha. Links are also really cool! Thanks in advance 😀

When they are just starting med school the good ones focus on learning their anatomy/physiology!

How can you be interested and not know what they do or where they even work?

Lol. I meant more along the lines of what procedures to they do. I realize they try to stabalize those patients brought to the emergency room long enough for them to be operated on.

EM is not about procedures. It's a part of the job, but 95% of patients you see, you won't even do an IV on. If procedures are what you want to do, go into surgery or interventional radiology.

depends on what you consider "stabilization" and "operating". I mean, sometimes I ensure patients are stable to continue their Rx narcotic dealing operation.

Essentially, EPs make two decisions when a patient arrives in the emergency department:
1. Admit?
2. Send home?

In between those decisions, they like to play Tetris and have sexy parties.

I would say that once you start med school (if you haven't already), join an EM club and do some shadowing with some EM docs/residents. Granted, from what I remember, shadowing is extremely boring when you have no clue as to what's going on - you will see a small jist of what occurs.

You are way too early to definitely know what specialty you want to pursue, of course there are exceptions. Keep an open mind and look at the numerous others out there. EM is great, but it fits a particular type of a physician - just like all others.

The admitted patients get to join the sexy parties!!!

We don't do much of anything. I sit around surfing the web all day long and consulting everyone to see all my patients. What a perfect time to get a cards, GI, and endocrine consult for the stubbed toe!

"Easy with that stump, m'aam! It's got MRSA!"

Gawd -- I love EM people!!! 🙂

I'm also glad I always have such valuable contributions to the discussion.

We order as many tests and call as many other doctors as we can so that we do not actually have to touch the patient.

Its actually like a dinner party where instead of hors d'oeuvres, we hand out CT scans and percocet.

Don't forget that drug that.. I think it starts with a d...it really worked for the patient's pain last time.

It drive me up a wall that lay-people think that everything revolves around surgery. Thats the third time Ive come across this in 2 days.
