I am currently a PGY2 at an osteopathic institution and I am loving neuro right now. Once I finish next year (woo hoo!), I was considering doing a neuro residency. Would I have to do 4 years of Neuro if I applied to a allopathic program, or could I come in as a PGY2?

You can actually transfer as a PGY2 now if you wanted to

But could I transfer into a MD program if I did an DO internship/residency?

the chief resident at Tufts went into neurology after an IM residency

You would probably be able to get credit for your past IM training at an osteopathic neurology program but from what I understand an allopathic neuro program probably would not be able to give you credit unless you are part of a dually accredited IM program. You might want to try contacting the ABPN to confirm that though.

...which is totally ridiculous since by then he will be qualified to be a medicine attending almost anywhere in the country. I'd take that over a crappy community transition year any day of the week. But you're right, you'd want to check with ABPN and/or any specific programs you'd be interested in.

Thanks everyone for their responses. I will check with ABPN.

It gives me nice warm fuzzies for having chosen the "right" specialty knowing folks from other fields wanna join the ranks! 😀 G'luck!

If you plan to go into an ACGME adult neurology residency, you must complete an ACGME internship (with at least 6 months of medicine/medicine subspecialty rotations).

I ran into a similar problem when I matched ACGME neuro but not an internship. I had several osteopathic internships offer me a spot, but an accreditation officer at ABPN informed me that I would not be eligible to sit for neurology boards if I did not complete at least 1 year of an ACGME internship prior to starting the neurology residency. Ultimately, I ended up scrambling into a dual accredited ACGME/AOA internship.

Obviously, a way to circumvent this is by entering an osteopathic neurology residency. But if you want to go into an ACGME neuro residency, you need the ACGME internship.

Try Methodist in TX -- they have someone who transferred from IM (cat).
