Going into OB

Okay my first rotation starts in a week for OB... here was my plan to get ready:

Read first aid for the wards and boards and wards OB section and hopefully know it as cold as possible.

Then during the semester go through either:
Kaplan OB
Blueprints OB
BRS OB

I dont know which one is best and the link for the thread for "OB books" doesnt work.

Otherwise I was just gonna watch a lot of porn and spend a lot of quality time with my girlfriend to get accustomed to the environment.

Dude...you will have a totally different perspective when you leave ob - on life, on women and on, well you know.

Blueprints ob - read it twice and do the pretest questions. This is my suggestion. If you have time load up on the other stuff. Some others will certainly have their opinion. For blueprints, I really only found it helpful (as a series) for ob/gyn and peds.

LOL, that is so true, I feel like I learned more psychiatry on OB/GYN clerkship than psychiatry clerkship as I felt I should have charged for listening to ob/gyn attendings complain about everything from how Ob/Gyns are portrayed in the media to everything else and then attack us (students), if we weren't there for that six weeks to try to talk-down some attendings they would all have gone bonkers. (Just kidding, but sort of not really kidding.)

Hey thanks for all the advice! I'm realllllly not looking forwards to it after everyones thoughts 'bout OB from other threads but at least it'll be over.

Blueprints it is then, any opinions regarding the kaplan/blueprints in regard for step 2 prep as well? I wanted to use books that I could read a second time right before step 2.

In regards to questions - I didnt see a thread on this, but would USMLE World be enough? Or should pretest, MKSAP, or NBS be the way to go? I'm boycotting Kaplan Qbank until they improve their step 1 questions.

I actually found Blueprints pretty useful for Step 2. Its concise so its good for quick review and it gives a pretty good discussion on pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management. But it would also be good to supplement the Blueprints with First Aid for Step 2. That's another great resource.

No kidding. I'm on OB right now, and there's nothing that can prepare you for the sights and ahem...smells of L&D.

I'm using Blueprints, Case Files, and for questions PreTest. I suggest using your residents and faculty to teach you. Everything they say seems to stick better for me.
