Goljan Audio/lectures BEFORE taking Path

So as an MS-I, would it be completely ridiculous to look at board prep stuff (ie. goljan) prior to taking my pathology course in the fall?

Now that most people have gone through path/pathophys, do you wish you had looked at board prep stuff while you were in the course?

If you have free time like riding the bus and have nothing to distract yourself with, I'd say go for it. It's not that you won't learn anything, it's just really inefficient and out of context without background. I realized that when I listen to it while taking the classes or after taking classes, I was able to understand everything he said... before then... not so much.

same here. We are systems based so I try to stick to listening to whatever system we are on. I may listen ahead but it is hard to appreciate the info until you are in that section or after. Can't comment on board prep.

It can't hurt, but like other have said it won't make much sense unless you've taken the course or done some path reading.

Second Question, for me at least it is always a good idea to look at board prep stuff while taking the class.

Studying Board "Review" material before you have taken the coursework is a poor use of your time. You REVIEW for USMLE and STUDY for your coursework. You cannot review what you have not learned in the first place. I suspect that your pathology faculty will have loads of objectives that will point you in the direction of the important topics of your path class.

Save your review materials for after your coursework is completed. My guess is that you will be sick of them by the time you take the actual test.

I listened to Goljan before I even started med school back when I still had "free time" and I don't see it as a waste of time at all. Granted, a lot was over my head (and still is), but the brain is a funny computer, and I am often surprised at things that pop into my head from listening to Goljan.

I disagree about boxing the review books till test time. True, review books are not intended to be primary learning tools, but they can be very helpful during courses in separating the wheat from the chaff. In med school we have a lot of chaff to sift through.

My view is that there is no bad learning. Anything that helps you learn is good, even if it is just hearing some words you don't really understand in goljan, or cramming some anatomy from a BRS book.

😱 I had never even heard of Goljan as a premed.


As for the OP, it wouldn't be a complete waste, but there are better things to do with your summer vacation. I don't even listen to Goljan until I've gone through the notes for that section completely. Otherwise it just doesn't stick.

I started listening to Goljan as a pre-schooler. By the time med school rolls around, it is old hat and frankly quite boring. I would wait until at least kindergarten so that you don't get burned out.

A waste of time, IMHO. There's too much technical lingo that you don't cover in MSI. Plus you won't remember it - I promise you. Even while taking the MSII pathology class, Goljan only became useful if I was listening to a topic we were currently studying.
