Can you people settle a debate?

If an average medical student listened to Goljan 10 times, and just memorized everything he mentioned in his audio would that be enough to pass USMLE Step 1?

Yes...assuming you had a working knowledge of phys, anatomy, pharm. Even though he usually covers these to some degree.

I felt like I could have 'passed' the test as soon as classes were over. Extra studying got my score up from there.

Somebody's in trouble...

Seriously, if I hear about how he broke wind one more time I think I'm going to get sick.

It looks like many people will leave the BRS and Kaplan books on the bookshelf and listen to Goljan from now until June. 👍

Let's do the math, if a person is taking Step 1 the second week in June, that is 8 weeks away. Goljan audio is 38 hours. You could pull it off. If you listened to Goljan 8-10 hours a day for eight weeks, that should be over 10X through Goljan. This is a small price to pay and an EASY WAY to pass Step 1. 😍

On the 9th time, turn your player off and recorder on and just recite the lectures. On the 10th time, as a change of pace, you can listen in your own voice. "Knuckle, knuckle, dimple, knuckle..."

Automaton, don't doubt the power of Goljan.

I don't necessarily agree with this. Granted, he's the man, and pretty damn good in teaching path--but there is still a crap load of stuff that is impt that he doesn't cover--especially some histopathological stuff covered in BRS. Additioanlly, I don't buy all his pointers about things that will shwo up on the test. Granted, they MAY have shown up on SOMEONE's test--the NBME people are aware of all the crap that is out in the market--and, getting the 5-10 extra questions that MAY show up won't determine a pass or a fail, but rather a 245 to a 250 maybe--whatever, u get my point.

I challenge you to try your method. Assuming, per one of your rpevious posts, that all you will be doing is listening to this old fart 24/7--

hey guys,
i am sure you guys have heard about edward goljan..anyways..he is the KING od the USMLE step 1 and everyone that i have spoken to that has used his book has scored extremely high on their usmle step 1..here is what we are doing starting tomorrow..we are meeting in sdn's chat room at 8PM Eastern Standard time and we are going to discuss the topics included in his book for 10 days with one HY review on the 11th day and one power reivew on the 12th day..i think if we put our minds together we can achieve alot..if you have his audio, great, the book that corresponds to that is the book we are using, if you have rapid review, or stars you can use that as well..i am posting the schedule below..anyone who is interested please feel free to keep up with the readings and join us in the discussion starting tomorrow..any questions please email me at [email protected]

The group will meet everyday at 8PM in the www.studentdoctor.net chat room. Discussions should not exceed 1 hour and please come with any questions you may have..chapter is to be read and studied, corresponding goljan questions should be completed prior to discussion, and webpath questions can also be completed to the corresponding sessions..webpath address is as follows..: www-medlib.med.utah.edu/WebPath/webpath.html

Schedule:

day 1(Thursday - April 14th) - cell injury
inflammation

day 2(Friday - April 15th) - fluids and hemodynamics
Nutrition

day 3 -(Saturday - April 16th) Neoplasia

day 4 -(Monday - April 18th) Hematology 1-3

day 5 - (Tuesday April 19th) Hematology 4-7

day 6 - ( Wednesday April 20th) Cardiology

day 7 -(Thursday April 21st)- Respiratory
GI

day 8 -(Friday April 22nd) Hepatobiliary
Renal

day 9 -( Saturday April 23rd) Gynecology
Endocrine

day 10-(Monday April 25th) Musculoskeletal
Skin
CNS

day 11-(Tuesday April 26th) Do comprehensive exam and HY
(discussion)

day 12-(Wednesday April 27th) HY+POWER REVIEW of all subjects and questions anyone

may have..

If this is successful we can do the same for first aid..it will only take an hour or less a day and i think this will force many of us to stick with a schedule and motivate eachother..I think it is crucial that everyone try to do the questions that goljan gives at the end of each section, and if possible, the webpath questions in that corresponding section. This way, when we are reviwing it together, we are actually reenforcing it for a third time, and when we do the HY and Power review we will have gone through all the material 4 to 5 times..not too bad for 10 days..Ideally, if everyone could use the notes that correspond to his audio that would be great, but his Stars or Rapid review i think arent too far off in content..when referring to webpath, go to where it says examinations, and take the exam for the corresponding day if you get a chance. I'm nto sure what time zone all of you are in so here is the time zone we will be meeting at. 8PM EASTERN STANDARD TIME..thats 7PM for all you in the mid west, and 5PM for all of you in the west..for any others around the world, please do the necessary mathematics..please do not hesitate to ask any questions about this meeting, or give me any input you may have..take care..

Dude, just get an IPOD and listen to Goljan all day, and all night (wear a small earpiece so you can listen to Goljan while you are sleeping). There isn't anything that people can add that is as reliable as Goljan. These study groups are doomed to fail, because you don't know if the person that is feeding you information has a solid knowledge of pathology.

So if I listen to Goljan audio a couple of times and read First Aid, is that enogh or should I still go through BRS Pathology?

The only person that can answer this question is you, and that's in hindsight after taking the exam.

Hello,
I want to know, are you using the Goljan Audio for PATHOLOGY REVIEW for usmle or are you using his audio cd's for USMLE REVIEW -- is he reviewing for the USMLE in total on the CD's or just Pathology?

Also, what book are u using? There is the Path text, Pathology review, then USMLE pathology review, then USMLE review alone -- what source should I be using for my general Path course and what book corresponds to his lectures on CD's. Somebody please help clarify this? thank you.

The Goljan audio is just a review of path. Although he does have a lot of integrations to other topics (pharm, micro) this is by no means sufficient for these topics.
As for books, the Rapid Reviews Pathology correlates pretty well with his audio lectures. I found that it took me a lot longer to read the Goljan chapters, so I listened to the audio lecture, then the next day, I reviewed that topic in BRS (because I could read it much faster than Rapid Reviews).

Hi I am buying the Goljan tapes for my wife who is a foreign doctor not yet really proficient in English. I just bought the Goljan pathology tapes - but are there also Goljan general review tapes. If so where on the web can you get them.

many thanks
