This is one of the Goljan questions I have:

The growth alteration expected in the endometrial mucosa of a postmenopausal woman who is on unopposed estrogen therapy is the same type of growth alteration you would expect in which of the following clinicopathologic conditions?

A. Kidneys in a patient with essential HTN
B. Brain in a patient with carotid artery atherosclerosis
C. Left ventricle in a patient with essential HTN
D. Distal esophageal mucosa in a patient with acid refulx
E. Prostate gland in an elderly man with urinary retention

So the answer is E. But why no C? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It's not C because cardiomyocytes do not divide. They hypertrophy in response to HTN. The endometrial mucosa in the question stem is hyperplastic because it's responding to a proliferative hormone signal and choice E is the only one that is also hyperplasia (responding to DHT proliferative signaling).

Choice A is sclerosis. Choice B is atrophy. Choice C is hypertrophy. Choice D is metaplasia. Choice E is hyperplasia.

So when it comes down to it, this is a basic pathology question on the concepts of how tissues respond to changes in the environment. Except they don't just come right out and say those terms. You must be able to recognize what they are getting at because this is exactly the style that USMLE questions are.
