  1. Pre-Medical
I've already read Complications and Better by Atul Gawande. Any other good books about surgery. Preferably neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, or orthopedic surgery.

Eh, at least he's not prestudying.

This, by an orthopod from Mayo, is one of the most enjoyable medical books I've read. That's coming from someone who wants nothing to do with surgery but knows good writing when he sees it.

Sorry the "wth" was meant for a poster above me, who had posted a my little pony wallpaper, lol. I'm pretty sure that guy has been banned. He was posting the images of my little pony in like every thread.

Oh, I saw that; it had something to do with My Little Pony 🙄

Just do a favor for yourself. If you are into books on doctors' lives and things like that simply because you enjoy it, feel free to read these. However, if you are trying to pre-study things like biochemical physioanatomy (don't bother looking that up, it's not real) for medical school, focus on your high school life. Enjoy it; you only get one opportunity to enjoy high school, so make the best of it. Join a club, do a sport, pick up a hobby, meet new people, whatever.

Focus on your academics and find enjoyable extracurricular activities. That's my biggest advice.

Sorry for that mini-lecture, but coming from someone who focused on academics during high school and really didn't pay attention to my social life, I would make sure to have a life outside of high school.

I'm not trying to pre-study. I'm just generally interested in reading books about surgeons experience. I'm not looking for textbooks.

Good. I don't know about any exact surgery-related books, but I know about Michelle Au's "This Won't Hurt a Bit." It talks about her experiences in medical school, residency, personal life, etc. She was originally a pediatric resident, but changed to anesthesia. It's a good book, and especially good if you want to go into medicine. I would recommend it.

Thanks

I can't imagine myself reading a book with a general narrative about medicine. I'd rather read something bioanthropology like Jared Diamond's collapse, or Guns, steel, and Germs, or something about culture.

I read that for history once. Pretty good book. Great author.

Check this out - http://surgeonsblog.blogspot.com/

He doesn't update his blog any more, but there's a lot of well-organized content that is timeless. He tells a lot of stories and talks about the thought process of a surgeon quite well. Great read.

He wrote a book too - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1583941479/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/102-4827661-3504167?ie=UTF8 - which I bought and also recommend.

Here's a pretty memorable entry about a 13-year old trauma patient dying in front of him in the OR - http://surgeonsblog.blogspot.com/2006/07/memorable-patients-part-four.html

If you ever want to read an ethics book, read "First, Do No Harm". Amazing book.
