I have the same question except for Pittsburgh area. My guess is the answer is the same wherever you go since these companies are pretty much national...

the verizon service in Philly seems to be good. I've never had any problems with it.

second that.

if i read correctly, someone on this site in a thread titled something like "the truth about drexel" or something like that-

he said that at&t has awful service at drexel and that it's worth paying the cancellation fee.

verizon apparently was the best and sprint the second best.

thanks for the responses...

any other thoughts?? I'm thinking about just keeping ATT...i have GSM, which is pretty well covered by ATT (incl. of Philly as seen on the coverage map).

The guy may have been talking about ATT (TDMA), which doesn't seem to get good reception over there...

additional input would be great...

thanks

AT&T's service at queen lane is abysmal. i live one block over from the school and the majority of the time i spend on the phone is consumed by asking the other person if he/she can hear me and apologizing for the crappy service, whilst roaming around my apartment trying to find a good reception spot. no lie. drop at&t like a bad habit. unless you plan on living in roxborough or some other place.

hey hobs...

do you know if ur friend has ATT GSM or ATT TDMA, cuz GSM seems to be good over there...

thanks for the 411

There is a thread about this that I started. Search for it somewhere.

Also, you can ask SolidGold. He works for the cell phone industry right now.

cooo

thanks for the heads up...

yes, DROP ATT! They are absolutely terrible... I was the one who sent the "all about DREXEL" post and yes, verizon is without a doubt, awesome. In fact, I don't think I've ever had a single dropped call here in philly since i switched. ATT is horrible and definetely worth paying the cancellation fee, especially if you plan on attending drexel. Sprint is also decent from what I hear, but verizon is definetely the best.

hmm, now i'm confused...

some people are saying ATT is good in Philly, and others despise it.

does anyone know for ATT GSM if it's good or not??

i called up the store in philly and they said that ATT-GSM was definitely better than ATT-TDMA (what most people have)

thanks for the help..

Well, if this will help you out, if you have ATT, you get NO reception inside of drexel. If you have verizon, you have 5 bars.. I don't know the difference between the 2 ATT services, but I can't imagine it's going to be remarkably different. If you choose ATT and decide to attend drexel (which i notice you are), you do so at your own risk. Verizon is without a doubt, better no matter where you go and has plans that are comparable to all ATT plans. All I know is that all the people who have/had ATT, have all been frustrated (and we even tried to get a petition to drop our contract w/o penalty, which obviously didn't work) and dropped our plans. I repeat, ATT sucks and I wouldn't take your chances with any "fancy" or "upgraded" ATT service.

I believe there is a thread established called "Best Cellular Phone Coverage Where Medical Schools Are?" From what I could remember, Sprint and Verizon got good feedback.

I have never had a problem with Verizon service in Philly...from West Philly (Penn area), north of the city (above Temple), to Center City (Jefferson...I work there). I would go with Verizon. 😎

I have verizon and will keep it when I move. And sunflower----Verizon in pittsburgh and surrounds is great, I have it and live here.

i'm not sure about the differences between the types of services, but one can't be that much better than the other. i think their infrastructure in the philly area just isn't that great. my phone is the regular kind--no digital network stuff, i think.

if your contract's up soon, maybe you can just be really annoyed for the first few months of school and tough it out. after that, i would suggest switching. at&t's a pretty crappy organization, and they seem to spend more money on their stupid ads than they do on actual services. but not like i've had bad experiences with them or anything.....

does anyone have any info on t mobile service in philly?

(another Verizon supporter) I have used Verizon in the Philly area and have had NO problems over the past 5 years. I've been to Drexel Med a few times and have had no reception problems there.

guys.....thanks for the advice...

ATT does really suck....i live a minute away from the school and it really really sucks.

I switched to verizon today.....and it's pretty damn clear...

thanks for all the help

I think T-Mobile service in Philly is pretty decent... if you have it, there shouldn't be too much of a problem in most areas, though at my house (in the Northern suburbs) the coverage sucks.

If you are looking for a plan, I agree with what everyone else said -- Verizon is the way to go.
