I will be starting med school next fall and would also like to hear some gift ideas that would be useful while in school (besides days at the spa, which wouldn't really appeal to me). I need some things I can tell relatives who have been bugging me about what I want for Christmas. I can never come up with anything! Are there things lots med students wish they wouldn't have had to buy themselves once they've started school? I'm thinking along the lines of equipment, clothing, books, etc. In your reply, please assume that Outbacks don't exist! 😀
Depends on where you are from and where you are going to school.
As far as clothings go, a nice comfortable pair of shoe will be nice - will be useful once you start rotations.
A nice wool/cashmere blend overcoat for the winter time.
Equipments - try to find out what you
MUST buy. A stethoscope would be nice. You can get them engraved too with your name. I like the Littman Cardiology 3, but this is my personal preference. Different people will give you different recommendations.
If you want to look traditional, you can get a nice medical bag to carry all your equipments
🙂
If you don't mind looking like a nerd, a pocket protector for your white labcoat or dress shirt/buttondowns (you'll be carrying at least 3 pens at all time)
Books - well depends on your study habbits, your schools, and other factors. Netter for Anatomy is nice. Board review books (BRS Anatomy, BRS Pathology, BRS Physiology) are good too. Not necessary, but a good medical dictionary might be useful for when you are reading textbooks and wonder what certain terms are (not necessary because you can look it up online or in school library but it is a nice book to have).
Not school related, but other books I would recommend would be: "Complications" by Atul Gawande, "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down" by Anne Fadiman, "Understanding Health Policy: A Clinical Approach" by Thomas Bodemheimer.
Games (Playstation, NES, XBox, PC/Mac) are good options for when the student have free time. Beer money are also good
🙂
Food
🙂 - who can cook when they have exams coming up. Gift certificates to places are nice. Foreman Grills are nice to have. Ramen noodles if you miss the college lifestyle.
If you have family/friends/relative swimming in cash, a nice chair that massages is nice (see Brookstone stores).
A subscription to a magazine would be nice ... whether it is USNews, Forbes, Economists, Time, National Geographic, etc.
Booklights, a bookstand (to open books open), highlighters, caffeine pills, index cards, binders, etc are practical for any students.
Tickets to a favorite sporting events (whether that is football, basketball, baseball, lacross, tennis, etc). Doesn't have to be professional either - can be at a collegiate level too.
If you really want to receive gifts that will help in med school, these are my suggestions. Personally I would like non-medically related gifts. Gift certificates to restaurants/stores, a nice electronic gizmo, something practical for the house, etc.
