Good distance from school

30-45 minutes commute if you are living with families ie not paying rent....

If you have to attend lecture, I can see anything further than 20 min getting old fast.

You definitely want to live as close as possible. I would set my limit at 30 minutes. I'm planning on living directly across the street from my school though. Waking up 10 minutes before lecture, being able to go home during lunch, and being able to go over to the anatomy lab and library any time I want is just way too good of a deal.

If you have a family I can understand living in a suburb 30 minutes away. It's going to make life a lot harder.

Wow. There's no way I'd live anywhere near 30 min away and actually go to school everyday. Maybe if attendance wasn't mandatory I would consider it, esp. if I had family 30 min away...but even still, I'd rather be close so I could go back and forth easily in order to study, eat lunch, etc.

I prefer to live close. Within 5 min...and preferably as close as I can without being on-campus. I only live about 15 min from my school now and I can tell you that the traffic, time spent driving and the worrying about parking is a huge deterrent for me and often the largest factor when debating whether or not to go to class.

IMO, living close reduces unnecessary stress on a daily basis, and anything to relieve yourself from stress during med school is great.

Live as close as possible! Depending on the location and weather, the normal 30 min commute to class can become a two hour panic attack before an exam

I think I'm going to limit it to 10 mins so I can have options for a suitable place. 15 mins can easily turn into an hour around here with traffic.

I'll be renting a house 10 minutes from the medical campus and I'm extremely happy. I also looked at a house 17 minutes away and that seemed to be too far to do daily(for labs, ill never go to lecture).

I'm gonna be 20 minutes away. Can't bitch about it too much as that means Mr. Tp13 is an hour away from his work.

That's what I'm planning on doing, either a studio or 1 bedroom.

I was also thinking of living in a graduate dorm since its so close.

Yeah, I had the pleasure (not really) of living with a roommate for a year and half in undergrad and promised myself I wouldn't go through that again!

Is living at home/20-30mins away any better for 3rd and 4th years? I think I would definitely want to be as close to campus my first year or two but then to save money could potentially do this. I guess I'm asking if the later years are "better"/ more feasible living farther away or off campus?

You're going to have to drive to various hospitals your 3rd and 4th year, so I guess it depends where your parents' house is in relation to your clinical rotations. There are some rotations, like surgery, which require you to be there early like at 5am, so if you live an hour away you'll have to wake up at 3:50 or earlier.

Thinking about renting a loft with a roommate ~10 mins from campus.

Having a roommate might help with studying the material and bouncing off ideas.

I have a few friends in med school and living together has really allowed them to collaborate. I can't imagine sitting in an apartment by myself studying for hours without going crazy.

I live about 25 minutes from NOVA, but South Florida traffic will get old very quick during medical school. I think living within biking/walking distance sounds pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Yes...traffic around Nova was horrendous. On top of the gridlock, some guys ladder fell off his van in the middle of the highway. It was nuts. Those apts right across from the dental school looked pretty good to me.
