For men, specifically. I love my Merrells for daily wear, and I can probably wear them with scrubs, but I'm wondering what kinds of nice-looking dress shoes are quite comfortable. I wouldn't mind dressing up nearly as much if dress shoes weren't generally so uncomfortable. I don't want to be "that guy" in khakis and tennis shoes, so I'd like something that looks fairly nice.

mephistos or uggs...nothin wrong with merrels

Gucci. Stylish and glove-like pillows on your feet.

I've heard danskos and have been considering them. Any input?

I'll second the Johnston and Murphy plug. The insoles are extremely comfortable. 👍

And just the thing for a 5 year old to vomit on. 😛

Leather is surprisingly resilient to spills and stains. If you treat it like your skin, (i.e. wash with soap and water, dry, and the re-apply any necessary polish) it will last forever. Added bonus, leather soled shoes with wood heels literally last forever. The sole and heel can be replaced for <$20. My grandfather has a pair of black toe capped oxfords he regularly wears that he has had for 60 years. In reality it makes economical sense, in the long run, to buy a more expensive pair of shoes which can be maintained than a cheaper pair which requires replacement.

They are, but if you don't wear them daily or aren't used to the heel, they can give you back/knee problems. I love mine, but it took a while to get them broken in. Same is true for the Danskos.

Most "good" dress shoes are actually really comfortable if you size correctly (length and width). I mean, they're not going to be at whatever new Nike Air technology is out there, but a leather soled, broken in oxford is actually pretty comfortable. I think we're generally just too used to the terrible Kenneth Cole $50 interview shoe that leaves you with blisters and back pain.

AE, Alden, and Johnston & Murphy all make good shoes. I actually prefer my Aldens over my running shoes because I feel like my gait is spring-loaded in the reeboks and they aren't water resistant.

Please don't tell me that this means you're going to be wearing khakis.

Tan color + white coat = 🙁

Grey and blue and black slacks all the way.

what are you talking about? khaki + white is perfectly fine. In fact, it looks better in my opinion. wearing a white coat with slacks that belong with a blazer = no go.

Oh my god, two people on SDN with differing opinions! Call AP, Reuters, the New York Times! Stop the presses!

just buy some brown danskos. they are super comfortable and long-lasting. I bought my pair after about 2 days on surgery, when I realized that gym shoes were not going to cut it when I was standing for 6 hours on a whipple. I've had them now for almost two years, and they still are holding up great. the nice part about the brown danskos is that they go well with scrubs and with khakis/tie. very much worth the $100 I spent.

I will add to the Johnston and Murphy caucus. The sheepskin lining is like walking on a cloud. I do have to agree that you need to wear them a lot to break them in; I got blisters the first couple of weeks wearing them, but after the leather stretches you're golden. They're also way more dressy than Merrells, Danskos, Clarks, etc... I've got a pair of Tidwells, which are classified as a casual shoe, but they're actually pretty damn spiffy, and much cheaper than their dress/business casual shoes.
I will say, though, that Clarks are also awesome. I wear Clarks boots everyday in the winter to combat the snow and ice. They are VERY well made and extremely comfortable.

I also think the white coat looks better with tan/khaki.

Bostonian shoes are quite durable and affordable as well.
