hey everyone, quick question; if you were to get a 17 on the DAT while having a gpa of 3.2 with research experience, working 2 years in a dental office, and various other credentials including extracirriculars and solid recommendation letters...is it still worth applying or should u retake the DATs again??? (applying to skewls like, BU, NYU, UMDNJ, UCONN, TEMPLE, U MARYLAND, TUFTS, and COLUMBIA). thanks

Personally I wouldnt retake it.

People on SDN will say to I bet you.

Most of them are liars and fakes so make your own decision. Read some of their posts. Some say they got 21-23 on the DAT.

Yea right is what I say!

Your fine.

ummm a 17 is just not good enough these days you should retake it, if u had a higher gpa then you would be ok but a 3.2 and 17 on dat will probably not do. dental poopie how do you know that everyone lies? the 17 does not separate an applicant from the average and it's definately not competitive anymore, like someone said before a lot of the people here are overachievers and 21's do happen...good luck slim take the dat again to limit all doubt, thats what i'll be doing too since my 17 didn't get me in this year.

😕 😕 😕

It all depends on what scores you got on the different sections. If you got a BAD score on a couple sections, you should consider retaking it. The average is going up, although it is not anything near 21-23. Also call the schools you're applying to, and find out the average score admitted there. They may give you a better idea of whether or not you need to retake it. :luck:

Go ask admissions directors and see how many 20+ DATs they received this year. Its really not that rare anymore.

That is pushing it. I thought my DAT score was a little low for my GPA...so I would def. aim higher...that's just me tho 😉 GL.

Retake it!!!
You need to get a 19AA, 17 pat is okay though with that GPA. Atleast from what I have observed at my school being on the predental presidency and knowing everyones scores. I got a 18 with a higher gpa. I only know of one girl this year that got in with a 17. That is just what I know from my school, Just depends, you may be just fine, but you are definately below average, if that really matters. Hope that helps. Good luck

you have to remember how schools screen applicants--the first screening is based on DAT scores and the GPA and THEN they will look at your extracurrs. kudos to you for your extracurrs, they rock. but what the school will see before they read the pages about your extracurrs will be your score/GPA.

therefore, it really doesn't matter HOW good your extracurrs are--if your scores/GPA isn't good enough, the school won't read any further into your file.

keeping that in mind, a 3.2 GPA is pretty average, maybe even a bit on the low side for some of the schools you're applying to (ie, UCONN and columbia). you want to counteract that with a good DAT score....and a 17 is still just too average. with your scores you probably will get a few interviews at some of the schools listed, but definitely not all.

If I were you, I wouldn't like my chances too well. If you are going to apply, use the shotgun method--apply to alot of schools with the hopes of getting interviews and an acceptance. If you retake, aim for a 20 in AA and PAT. Then you'll be sitting pretty. You've still got plenty of time. Good luck!

I applied to basically the same schools and had a 3.4 overall, 3.3 science a 17 on the DAT, 4 years of dental experience, a hell of a lot of extracurrics, and research and I didn't get in anywhere until I retook my DAT and got 18s and 19s. That was for this past cycle.

BTW I didn't even get into NYU with the 17 and my whole family are alumni of NYU dental.

I heard its only getting more and more competitive. so my advice is retake the DAT!!! I did and believe me I really didn't want to but my dream for success was greater than my diswant to retake the exam. If you want to go into dentistry then you will retake the exam! GOOD LUCK!!
