With the merger of residencies and accreditation. Will this allow DO's access to fellowships since all residencies will be ACGME? I know there used to be a problem with DO's matching MD fellowships after DO residencies. Is this now going to be alleviated?

There is no clear answer. It really depends on whether or not the DO stigma is still there. Obviously they will otherwise be allowed to pursue these fellowships.

So at least technically speaking all fellowships are open to both MD/DO students after completing residency?

Yes technically, I think otherwise DO's would not have agreed to the merger. In practice however I'm sure that it will be a long time before any DO steps through the doors of certain fellowships that are MD strongholds, especially derm/optho/etc..

Edit: might get better insight from an Attending/Student at that point.

There will be no lock out of fellowships to DO's who graduate from ACGME or AOA programs who have received ACGME initial accreditation. For AOA programs currently in transition, there is a list of ACGME fellowship that have will consider AOA graduating residents for their programs.
