Good Personal Statement topic?

Hello there,
I'm in the process of writing my personal statement and was thinking about writing about my years working in child care. I have worked at a day care center for 3 years now and it has been one of the best experiences I've ever had. Plus, it really has helped me get over my shyness, since I would have to give parents both good and bad news about their children. I also have formed strong bonds with the kids and had the opportunity to teach them...although it's mostly just abc's and numbers. I also got some insight into how children's minds work...scary thing I must tell you. This kinda inspired me to start volunteering at the local children's hopsital, and now have an interest in maybe doing peds. I could talk more but I think you get the idea. What do you think?

I think that is a great ideal for your personal statement. I wrote mine about teaching. My interviewers seemed to enjoy it. Just make sure that your app is interesting.

Sounds like the experience really meant something to you-- and that's what makes a good personal statement. What I'd do is talk about why working in day care has prepared you to be a fabulous doctor. Tie in getting over shyness (the bad/good news is something doctors deal with every day), working patiently and diplomatically with the children (which I assume you did) and any medical aspects of your job and working at the hospital. Med schools would like to see that you can handle the people as well as the illnesses they have. It sounds like you can do both quite well! Just make sure your PS makes that abundantly clear.

Oh yes, this was probably the best thing I've ever done and feel quite passionate about it. Actually no I'm not a non-trad applicant. Just finished my 4th year of college (21years old) and will be graduating next year.
