I graduate this year from a CUNY school with a very rigorous science curriculum with my B.S. in Health Sciences. As far as pre-reqs go I still need Orgo 1&2, Physics 1&2, and possibly Biochem and Anatomy. I am getting tired of my school (large class size, etc) and would like to do an informal post bacc at a private university. I have been interested in Hofstra, LIU, and Touro and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? right now I am leaning toward Hofstra. Thanks

go to a cheap school, dont go to an expensive one. hunter has a program, its cheap and good, so does city college

Yea but I am in CUNY right now (Brooklyn College) and I am not a fan of the huge lecture halls and unnecessary rigor of the classes compared to other schools. I would consider Hunter or City but I didnt think they would be much different since they are also CUNY.

Bk college is hard, there are other choices, like CSI and City Tech (very easy schools.)

if u go private, you will pay a lot more and its not 100 times easier.

Yes, Brooklyn College is extremely hard...I feel like I am taking Harvard level classes compared to my friends, but I graduate this Fall and did quite well. I live in Queens and drive so prefer not to go to the city (Hunter&City), CSI is quite far from me and isn't City Tech a 2 year school? money is not really an issue because I don't pay for school and literally only need 5 classes max.

city tech is a 4 year school. anything that doesnt have the words community college in the title = 4 yr school. why dont u take calsses at Queens college im sure its not hard? I guess Hofstra can do the job, i just like how cheap cunys are (esp if you go to easier schools that make it worth it.)

I have friends that went to Queens and I believe its pretty hard. so City Tech is easy?, I might give it a shot. I also like how cheap CUNY's are, very good bang for your buck.

city tech is easier compared to brooklyn college. and they have a nice schedule for most bio classes. i had friends who took classes there.

I just looked up some classes, does not seem to have much options for orgo classes (what I need) I would prefer later classes, I also drive and it seems that parking would be impossible over there....this is going to take some research to find a school.

ye man look around and see what makes sense for you.

Just out of curiosity, where did you attend?

I went to city tech and now I transferred to brooklyn college. So I can say from experience that city tech is a lot easier.

I actually have a question about that, is that frowned upon? Like when you apply to dental school do you have to get transcripts from every school and they see you attended say 6 different schools, or since its CUNY it falls under one umbrella?

I'm not sure whether it's frowned on that you transferred many schools, but no I don't think cuny falls under one big umbrella it's still 6 different schools.

CUNYs teach you that sex cells reproduce via meiosis and Harvard will also teach you that sex cells reproduce via meiosis...

The material is the same no matter where you go. There are only two differences:
1) How much the rest of your class gives a **** if its graded on a curve.
2) If you have an *** of a professor.

+1

i applied with a lot of schools under my belt, if they dont like that, i cannot change it. i just had to do what made sense for me at those times. but i think my overall gpa and dat scores should speak for themselves.

actually, that are many more important differences than that.

For example, i know some school's whos professors use the same exams over and over .... <--- EASY A.

Another school has a douche bag professor who gives out take home tests..
Another school has professors that can care less about cheating.

Life sometimes is unfair

Try the post-bacc program at Columbia if you are sick of CUNY. I heard it's a great program.

thats too expensive, why would anyone waste so much $$$ on a post bacc. go to CUNY and call it a day. find the easier schools and make the leap. i would not spend 20 to 40K on a post bacc, but hey thats me.

For other people who went to CUNY, where did you take Organic? I still need to take it and everyone says it is hardest at my school, Brooklyn College. Where should I consider taking it on e-permit? thanks. I am considering Queens, York, Lehman, Medgar Evers (them being most accessible to me).

I would look at SUNY, especially the bigger research SUNY schools like Buffalo, Binghamton, and Stony Brook. 2 of these have dental schools, so it would give you a chance to get to know some o the staff if you volunteer.

I agree about not paying for private schools tuition, I did my post bacc at a SUNY and have just got back from my first interview.

I live in NYC and going away to a SUNY just isnt an option for me.

Thank you for the supporting examples to my thesis. 😉

Attend NYU. Most postbaccs at NYU do extremely well in their courses and go on to medical/dental schools.

Really? I was thinking of NYU but heard their undergrad is extremely difficult.

Going to an easier CUNY school doesn't make a difference in dental school admissions. They would then used the DAT scores as indicators to see whether or not you know your material well. Then, it creates complications if you don't know your materials well to score well on the DAT. Even if you somehow score well on the DAT and ended up in dental school, your easy load from undergrad will overexhaust you in dental school. One year of hardcore biochem undergrad is equivalent to three weeks of materials in dental school. Make a wise decision and stay at your school and try your best at the school and not fail any classes. Dental school knows the rigorousness of your classes from your undergrad school and will kindly take that into consideration when reviewing your application. Note: I'm not saying that you shouldn't choose easier schools, but long term, your hard classes at a harder school will pay off in dental school.

cuny doesnt mean easier, brooklyn college is harder than NYU in some classes.

lesson of the day: study hard and do well! if u get into d-school, just stay in.

As a CUNY queens grad I would stay far away from this school for your prerequisites. The amount of cheating in this school is sickening (idk how bad brooklyn is). Also for orgo be prepared for the fact that half of the class has romano as a tutor before day 1 of class. However, for the non prereq classes this school can be quite enjoyable and you may even be able to pick up a job as an adjunct teaching intro bio lab sections as a grad student. (65$/hr)

having romano as a tutor is probably the smartest thing one can do, he teaches a lot better than most profs.
