Hey guys! I'm new to this forum! I was wondering if any of you could recommend a university in Texas that has a good biology program that I should apply to transfer to. I can't afford private universities, my parents are paying my way through college, and they'd prefer a public school. I went to Oklahoma State, and I hated it. I guess it was too agriculture for me? That's why I don't think I'll transfer to A&M unless I got into their veterinary medicine program.

Any ideas, or suggestions? I'm also trying to find a *somewhat* smaller school

I go to a smaller school in TX. I think our biology program is pretty good and challenging, but we're far and few between on pre-vet students. But that means less competition for shadowing/volunteer opportunities here. 😛 PM me if you have any questions or specifics about my school. 🙂

I honestly can't say I know too much about it, but I know Tarleton State is is a fairly popular school for pre-vet students. I've met a couple A&M veterinary grads who went there for undergrad. I'm a current TAMU student myself.

The four doctors at the SA clinic I work at graduated from A&M. Two of them did their undergrad there, one at Incarnate Word, and one at UT. From the five people in my Histology class at UTSA, three have been accepted into MD, DO or DVM programs. I don't know about Texas State, but I know they offer the required Animal Science and Animal Nutrition course for A&M.

I hope this is fairly helpful. Texas is huge, obviously, so is there a certain area of the state you would like to live in?

I'd also suggest you check out the course catalogs from the above-mentioned schools to ensure they have all the upper levels and electives you need.

Do not pick a school just based on a program. Do you really want to be stuck in a school with the best program that you hate?

Go on tours of prospective schools. Talk to current students and recruitment. Choose a school that you get a great vibe from. Also take into consideration what the area has to offer for stores, entertainment and transportation.

Only one school in my area had a pre-vet program. I got bad vibes from the students I met and did not feel comfortable on campus. There was no public transportation, so getting around the town for errands would have been hard and expensive. I chose a slightly larger university with a biology program. I knew the area. There was public transportation. I got great vibes from being on campus. The profs were amazing. I had no regrets.

I considered Tarleton State, but my brother said it was a joke university (he's a pharmacist, so I considered his opinion) for pre-vet students. What's the area like?

Preferably west or east, I'm not too found on south Texas, but between austin or houston is fine!

I ended up going to a school with a good program, but I hated it 😛. But I'll definitely take in consideration your suggestions on how I feel when I visit, and whatnot.

You probably wouldn't like my school then. I'm south. Very south. But I enjoy the weather haha

Are you from Texas, Fragaria?

The reason I ask is because there really isn't much between Austin and Houston. There's Bastrop and all these little towns. I don't really think there's much in terms of competitive institutions of higher learning between those cities.

Yes I am, I didn't mean directly between, I just meant I'd like somewhere closer to there if I went that way ;P

I'm curious as to why he would say that it is a "joke" university.. ?

From what I can remember, I believe it was something about him saying that the science program there isn't a good program? I'm not sure.

Sorry for double posts, but I'd like to thank everyone for their suggestion! I decided that I'm going to get the rest of my basics, such as my extremely hard courses done at my local community college, and then I'll transfer to somewhere I feel comfortable. I really appreciate everyone trying to help. <3 You guys are awesome.
