I am an undergrad senior and I'm looking to apply this summer to med school. I was wondering which schools are good quality for their average acceptance rate(who also have a good acceptance rate for out of state residents). I have a lower GPA (3.45) and I haven't taken the mcat yet (I will next month). Which schools should I apply to that are good but that I have a chance of getting in?
open to MD or DO schools, but prefer MD
thanks

First off your GPA isn't bad, so don't get down on yourself. As far as what schools to apply to it depends on where you are from. In state will be easier to get into than out of state. Get a book that has recent stats on avg. GPA and MCAT of accepted students to see roughly where you fit in at individual schools. Realize though that these numbers are 'averages' and people do get in with lower numbers but exceptional personalities and experiences. The only way to get into school is to apply. If you want to go to Harvard or Yale, apply! Don't count yourself out on numbers alone. That being said, apply to places where your numbers are in the range of accepted students. If you are accepted at multiple schools you can decide for yourself what school is better than another one. I am of the opinion that med schools are like beer: They're all good, some are just better than others.

I got in with a slightly higher GPA than yours, so thats not a problem. Just study hard for the MCAT and consider taking a MCAT course. I'm convinced that my high MCAT score got me into med school.

Acceptance rates are not necessarily indicative of how competitive a school is because applicants self select. For example, Chicago Med has a low acceptance rate because they have so many applicants, but their criteria for acceptance are not that high. Try your state school for sure. Other than that, try for some of the private schools known for accepting out of staters: Chicago Med, New York Medical College, Medical College of Wisconsin, and others. Also, try some "reach" schools which are schools with great reputations that you would love to attend. If you don't try some of these, you may miss a great opportunity. Good luck.

yeah your state school definately and for m.d. check out some info on the follwoing: Albany, NYMC, Temple, MCP Hanemann, Medical college of wisconsin, medical college of virginia, loma linda, chicago med, ect. If you are open to D.O. schools definatley apply to a couple of them too. The osteopathic forum would know better about where. Your GPA is good enough for M.D and D.O. Shoot for at least a 30 on the MCAT. Good luck.

if you are from california, i might not waste my time applying to like UCLA or UCSF. cali schools are pretty hard to get into. but if you have good MCATS and experiences....then anything is possible.

Look up US News and World Report. They have stats for avg gpa, mcats, in-state and out-of-state acceptance rate. And see your pre med advisor to see which schools have drawn from your undergrad in the past.
