I was offered an inpatient pharmacist hospital position at Banner Health Baywood in Mesa, AZ. The shift is all evenings five days a week and every other weekend. 8 hour shifts. I get to work 50/50 morning and evening shift and every third weekend where I am at now. Plus we do 10 hour shifts which I like more since you get more days off. Baywood is also needing 2 more pharmacists right now and a pharmacy senior manager position open, whatever that is, on their website. My gut is telling me that things are probably a mess and there may be high turnover rates at that banner health location in Mesa. I'm afraid to step into an ugly situation with all new pharmacists with all of us newbies working the same evening shift. Does anyone have any experience working at this particular inpatient Banner health location in Mesa as a pharmacist?

why would you swap to a job thats every other weekend, and all evenings from an every third rotating shift of 10s?

That's what I was thinking. Every other weekend is not that much fun after awhile. Must pay a ton more money.

It's can be easier to arrange child care if one works straight shifts, rather than alternating shifts. Also, maybe the person is currently in retail, and looking to move into hospital, so they are willing to take whatever hospital job they can get.

High turnover can be a warning sign, but sometimes it really has nothing to do with the job. I would ask if you could talk to a pharmacist currently working there....not that they are going to come out and tell you if things were horrible there, but sometimes you can get a good feel for stuff by someone's body language and by what they don't say.

There would have to be someone here from the Phoenix area who could fill you in.

I am currently working in a hospital setting and I really love my job and coworkers. The only negative thing is where I am living is kind of boring to me and does not offer outdoors activities. Thank you everyone for the replies and thank you justanotherrph for reaffirming why I should not take the position. I definitely would not be happy working all evenings and every other weekend. I am single and never married nor have kids but that schedule is not ideal for me. I like everything about where I work now but I do like the change in scenery only for the right job. I'll continue looking in the Phoenix area for a better schedule.

I am working in a boring city near New Orleans and just wanted a change of scenery. I am not married nor have kids. I declined the offer thanks to JustAnotherRPH but I am continuing to look for a place in or near Phoenix for a better schedule than all evenings.

Mesa is not that far from Phoenix. Both have pockets of hoods/run down buildings. But definitely nothing as bad as LA or some cities in the east. Scottsdale, Ahwatukee, and Gilbert are good places to live.

Turning down Banner was probably not a good idea given all the hospitals they have. I hope you didn't burn any bridges there. A large hospital system does allow for more opportunities through transfers. And I know there are not many other current pharmacist positions available at the other hospitals.

Really don't think there is anything wrong with Banner, they tend to have the same problems as any other hospital and I'm rather shocked you relied on one person's opinion. I know some of the people there at Baywood and don't see a problem.

Day shifts are desired and many day shift positions are filled from the current PRN/evening shift folks rather than an outside candidate. I would consider taking evening shift as a step towards eventually landing a day shift.

This is assuming the individual doing the interpretation can analyze what they see/saw. You're right on point; if you want to know the truth, body language rarely lies.
