Got accepted to one of my top choice medical schools, is it worth it to keep going to interviews?

Hello,

Very new to SDN, I apologize if I'm not posting in the right area but would love any advice/ thoughts on this question!

I got accepted to a program that was definitely in my top 5, but still have 3 more interviews as of now to attend. The other interviews are at schools I can't say I'm in love with/ really want to go to. At the same time I'm worried about putting my eggs in one basket/ missing out on these other programs in case these schools have great financial aid packages and such. The cost of flying to these interviews as well is another concern. Any advice/ suggestions would be great!

Congrats for getting accepted to a program that you are really excited about. At this point, you need to think about whether it is likely any of the other schools is possibly a good fit, especially if the Fin aid was favorable at that school. Fit includes whether you would enjoy living in the city (sounds like they are all far away), whether they are research heavy, whether the curriculum is primarily team-based or lecture-based, whether you have a support system in the area, etc. Much of the "fit" can be ascertained without an in-person visit and usually, applicants only meet a small fraction of the student body and faculty on an interview, so I would only attend one of these other three interviews if the "fit" -on paper - is good for you.

Depends. Where did you get in? What interviews are left?

I submit that there's no need to go on any more interviews.

And congrats on the accept!!!

Probably not worth it if you don’t want to go there. There are three major reasons to go to a particular school:
1) what the school can offer (prestige, residency programs, etc)
2) cost
3) location

1 and 2 matter a hell of a lot more than 3 but you still have to consider 3.

If you think your “feel” for a school after visiting for a day is going to have any indication of how your four years will go, you are delusional. Stick to these three completely objective factors and make your decision.

Great advice, and definitely something to think about. Thanks so much!

Will definitely be looking more closely into these schools before spending any more money going to visit places. Thanks so much for the advice!

I would continue to interview as long as you think that you might attend the school offering you the interview provided they offered you the right financial/merit aid package. For example, if I got into Harvard (assume that's my first choice), I might still interview at UCLA with the hopes that I would receive a Geffen Scholarship and be able to attend medical school for free. If, however, I would attend Harvard over UCLA even if UCLA were free, then I would not bother to interview there.

Weird flex, but okay.

Lol, jk..sort of..

If you have cash and want to travel/explore options then go for it. If you want to save and are decided then cancel interviews.

Enjoy your time before matriculation!!! Do everything you want to do within the law.
