Had the dat early morning in a city 45 minutes away from home. just got back home from downing some beers with a college buddy. i can say im pretty satisfied with my score. this is my second time taking the dat, i applied this cycle and got a few interviews but got wait listed at most of the schools. hopefully now im more competitive for this cycle. I've been working as a chem tutor at a local college since in august so it made studying kinda easy since i was basically getting paid for it the entire time. i'd say about 4 months passive studying. the week before the test i pretty much just lazy'd it out. i told myself i was gonna study a few times, but every time i sat down i was just like "eff it, i just wanna be done with this".

oK So the day before i ate one of those melatonin brownies around 4pm so i could fall asleep in time. i thought they were gonna kick in slowly in about 3 hrs, instead in less than 1 hr i kept dazing in and out of sleep and before you know it i was knocked out cold. i woke for a few hrs and just lied there for while then fell asleep. i woke up at 6:30 with ease and got to the testing site around 8.

PAT- CDP,topscore- theres no real way to explain the difficulty of this section sometimes. im surprised i did as good as i did, i thought i was gonna get another 19 or something.

keyholes- this was harder than any cdp or topscore test. some of the shapes had all sorts of contortions and random ridges everywhere. there were like 6 of them which were indistinguishable. i spent like 15 minutes on this section.

TFE- i wouldn't lose more than 2 max on this section on practice tests, but on the real thing it was just a lot harder. i guessed more than i typically did. i used like another 15 minutes on this section.

Angles- beleive it or not this section was actually easier than topscore and cdp. just go with your instincts.

Hole Punches- this was way easier than topscore. i did some markings on the board to help me visualize the holes. finished this section quickly.

Cubes- this section was on par with cdp and topscore. there was one set-up where there was a definitive hidden cube. i could see how it could trap some ppl.

Pattern Fold- not terribly difficult, on par with topscore but differnet types of questions.

QR- math destroyer- i did 9/10 test and they prepped me pretty well. i time myself for each section and then if necessary go back and do the questions i starred without being timed to see what i was doing wrong.

RC Holy crap i did not expect to do this good at all! The whole search and destroy thing doesn't work with me, i always lose focus. but the passages i got were really interesting so i was able to read into them really well and remember most of the information. they were about
quantum mechanics- have been into reading about these types of topics when im bored on the computer. My physics professor who wrote me a recommendation did research with particles near absolute zero. so i remembered chatting with him about it.
hurricanes- being from fl i've experienced these alot.
stomach bacteria- i did a medical trip to costa rica a few winters ago and one of the main things we were treating were gastritis so the information seemed more interesting to me.

Natural Sciences- i finished this section with 30 minutes left. i went to the bathroom in that time and then just reviewed some of the bio questions i was stuck on.

Bio - cliffs, kaplan blue book, datqvault, khan acadamy, dat destroyer- funny thing is the first time this was my most confident section and i was aiming for a 30. this time it became the section i was concerned the most due to the variability of the questions. its only a few questions difference between a high score and a average score. there were a handful of questions which werent covered in any of the above material but i knew only because took upper level bio courses like, physiology, embrology, and molecular genetics. some of the questions seriously made me just sit think about it for a few minutes. its like i was trying to go back in time in my brain and remember. i had at least 4 questions which i got down to 2 choices and just took a 50/50 guess. There would be questions about topics i know in depth, but don't remeber specific vocab words for. DATQVAULT is amazing! there were at 2 questions that i knew directly because of datqvault. On datqvault i was scoring between 18-20 for most of them. I'm really happy i at least broke even with my old score. my thoughts: this section is not to be taken lightly. although most of the questions are straight forward, there are some that really require you to think and analyze just what the hell is going on.

GC- i've been tutoring this for quite a few months so i've just naturally gotten better at it. after explaining concepts and doing questions with students i pretty much covered most of the topics. i watched a few chads videos from a friends account too.

OC- destroyer, odyssey. to most ppl this would be a great score, but im kinda bummed on it. i did the ENTIRE odyssey, i understood everything to the bone. i know exactly which 2 questons i got wrong. they both were very tricky and had ambiguous answer choices. i wouldn't get more than 1 question wrong on topscore. my official opinion on odyssey if you are a first timer don't bother with it, destroyer is enough with chads. if your taking it your 2nd time and you have a relatively strong base and want to perfect it and have a lot of time to kill, then yeah i'd reccomend it then.

cdp results: all pretty much averaging 20
topscore aa/ts/bio/gc/oc/qr/rc/pat

my job is pretty chill and most of the time i end up not having anything to do so i pretty much studied on the job and almost never outside of work. there would be days where i would not have a student so i'd spend the entire time goofing off on the computers. eventually stumbling got boring and studying sounded fun. if your a recent graduate just wanting to kill time while applying to dental school and am need of money then i highly recommend working as a tutor at your local college. there is a lot of money in it and its the perfect bridge between undergrad and dental school because it keeps your mind up to pace. my base pay is 13/hr plus if you can get a pool of private students then your net gain increases dramatically. i charge anywhere between 35-50 an hour and students are willing to pay. im pulling in about 2k a month, which i know may not seem like a lot to some of you, but it basically covers all my bills, car payments, rent, and still leaves me a significant amount left over.

my stats cgpa/sgpa/bcp of 3.54/3.37/3.4
im applying to 20 schools this round. i know some of you might think thats a lot. it's just that im a reapplicant and i dont want to take any chances of having to waste another year again. My first choice is UoP because of it's accelerated program. i dont think im gonna take any classes this upcoming year because i know ill be busy with interviews most of the time. although i might take anatomy b/c its a pre-req for a lot of schools. i ordered one of those waxing kits so ill have something to do at work this following year since im done studying for the dat.

congrats dude! you killed it! I got mine scheduled for June 26th, well see what occurs. I'm debating on chickening out and post poning.

rav when did you apply last year, like what month? you have good stats im curious as to why you didn't get in.

i was a ******* and made careless mistakes. i classified my study abroad classes wrong and it held up my application by 2 months. on top of that i had some other errors that might not of looked good to the adcoms. most of my interviews were post december, when classes were pretty much already filled.

Good Job!!.. It must feel good to be done with the test, knowing that you do not have to improve any more on it.... Good luck getting in this cycle!!

I'm scheduled to take mine on June 30th, but I also might chicken out and push it back a month! 😛

I've been lurking around this forum for about a week now... I'm so glad I stumbled across it. It's such a treasure!

 Awesome!
I started studying about 2 weeks ago... :scared: I'm nervous I won't feel prepared that soon, but I don't want to change the date or else I'm afraid I'll slack on studying if I take off the pressure!

congrats . You will definetly get in. I had a question about bio. If i have not taken upper division bio courses and plan on taking the dat this summer what are the books you suggest to study. Thanks

well i dont think you need upper level classes, but they sure do help. the best way to study for bio is use broad resources. dont just rely on one study tool, theres just too much bio for one thing to cover all the way. example: kaplan blue book was very general and lacked in quite a few areas, but was pretty good with the physiology portion. cliffs was useful, but lacked in a few areas like physiology. then there are those small obscure topics that are just confusing like the difference between chromasome/chromatin/chromatid. little things like that were explained well through khan academy. datqvault is a very good tool. it not only gives you good bio simulations, but it covers topics not covered at all in cliffs or kaplan. datqvault even shows certain strategies for certain question types.

example: whats the difference between northern/western/souther blotting?? can you remember off the top of your head, you know they have to do with dna and enzymes, but do you know exactly which one does which? when your crunched for time taking the actual dat questions like this will really piss you off. datqvault had a strategy call SNOW DROP, it made memorizing it so much easier.

the website also has really good embrology quesions that deal with fertilization, cortical granules, and the zona pellucida. these are topics i only know because i took embryology in undergrad, but nothing in any of the reviews books i studied went into them.

One important note: none of the study materials i used once went in depth into nephron physiology. i think datqvault had maybe 1 question about it on their site. besides that, none of them even mentioned the Single effect on the ascending loop of henle. this is prob one of the most important phenomena in excretory physiology. the only reason i knew of it was from taking molecular physiology my senior year.

so yeah, my best advice is use different sources. study them all as much as you can, but after a point its out of your hands. i think the only sure way to know EVERYTHING is to basically memorize the entire campbells book...but even then they could throw some random topic at you and have you apply it a way you've never seen before.

Great Job on your second DAT! I'll do the same in August and hopefully I'll have around the same new scores as you.

Did you prepare yourself different for the first and the 2nd? If yes, how?

first time i didnt know about this site. i had a kaplan course and the dat destroyer- thats it. kaplan was a big let down. destroyer really helped. these were all i used the first time. it was also my last semester of undergrad and i was getting swamped in classes, volunteering, social life. its weird; my senior was prob one of the funnest years, but it was also the HARDEST academic wise.

second time- found out from ppl on this site about topscore, cliffs, datqvault, basically all the best study materials. on top of that my tutoring gig basically kept reinforcing everything i already knew and provided a good atmosphere for passive studying.

some of you are probably wondering why i would retake if my first score were good. well like i said before i applied this cycle, made some dumb mistakes, and am waitlisted at a few schools. i wanted to show dental schools that im actively trying to improve my application on something. i had to decide whether to take post bacc classes in spring and summer to raise my gpa or just retake the dat. i found it easier and cheaper for me to just retake the dat because i was already getting paid to tutor some of the subjects.

I'll be following your footsteps! I'll also retake my DAT in August since I think that my 20AA 1st DAT score isn't impressive enough to get me anywhere. At the same time, I want to apply to a MS program to have a competitive GPA just in case I don't get an interview.

I've got to look into tutoring at a local college. How did you get that job?

Do you know how much the DAT stressed on complex nomenclature? Ochem at my school always provided the structure and did not require us to name the compound so nomenclature has always been my weakest point.

Something like propanol I can deduce and name, but when you get to something like N-methyl-3-butenamide, it's going to be much harder for me

i think if you have a 20 its not bad as long as you have averagish gpa. plus your doing a masters too so that'll help you out tons.

its kinda funny story how i landed the job. after i graduated i tried getting a job as a lab tech. i applied EVERYWHERE. all over florida, new jersey, new york, and maryland. i prob applied to over 70 positions. i would spend whole days just applying for jobs, personalizing each cover letter. i felt like applying for a job was a job in itself. i didnt get any job offers, all major companies wanted someone with at least 5 years of industry experience. no room for recent grads in the suffering market. and the thing is i worked as a periodontal research assistant for over a year in undergrad, but that still wasnt enough for them. so things started looking really grim, i had less than $200 to my name, owed about $1600 in credit card debt, and to top it off had to start paying off student loans soon. i was getting desperate so i started applying to regular jobs like starbucks and whatnot. around this time someone mentioned to me about tutoring so sent out a quick online application, but i didnt take it seriously cuz i thought it would be a lame job only working 2-4 hrs a week. fast forward another 2 weeks-i landed a job at starbucks, i got a call the morning before my first day from the tutoring job to come in for an interview within the next 2 hrs. i remember this vividly because i was really hung over from going out the night before. i didnt think much of it at first, i thought they were just gonna have me come in once or twice a week to help a few students out. man was i wrong, the interview was very formal. they basically sat me down and asked me about my teaching experience and i told them i tutored ap bio students my senior year of college. then they gave me a bio test, i finished in less than 10 minutes. not only did i get every question right, but i actually pointed out to them mistakes in their own test. they were impressed so they made me a job off: 35 hrs/week at 13/hr!! i was like holy ****, thats way more than i'd make at starbucks and very comparable to what i'd make as a lab tech. It's not even real work for me, its all stuff i just had on the dat.

after awhile i kept getting questions from students whether or not i do any private tutoring and how much i charge. i had no idea what the market price was for a good tutor so i was like whatever 20/hr is fine. well it turns out 20/hr is REALLY CHEAP. i was getting students right and left, i started to have to turn students down cuz i was just fully booked every week. around this time i saw business potential and me being the business-savy guy i am decided to take it to the next level.

spring semester started and i upgraded my business plan. I began making a bunch of orgo practice tests' with detailed solutions, they would cover whole topics and reactions. each review took approx 4-5 hrs to make but i would always make them when i was at work so it was like i was getting paid to make them. then i would make photo copies and just sell the copy's for like 25$ bucks each. i made like over 10 different test and sold copy's to whomever needed it. the students said they really helped. i started charging a higher rate so i'd do less hrs for more money. Between 35-50/hr: if they were really broke college students i charged them 35 and ppl who i knew had extra disposable income i charged 50. there was this one girl with fake tits trying to tell me i was expensive and she wants the same cheaper price i gave her friend. i was like "hell no", if she can afford boobs then she can afford me.

some of the students became regulars and i'd see them on a weakly basis. networking is really important, a lot of my new clients were referred to me by former students and other tutors. i made a website 5 months ago and forgot about it, then i randomly got a call from someone who said they found me on google and needed a orgo tutor. he's one of my best clients now cuz he see's me 3-4 hrs every week. i just made some business cards recently too and am gonna use them to further network. sometimes i would cut a deal with students, something like do 4 hrs and ill give you the 5th one free -it worked

business is all just a game. i think doing all this reassured me i want to go into dentistry even more and take charge of my own practice. i think its kinda exciting doing your marketing and stuff like that.

yea naming can be tricky sometimes. just watch the first chads orgo video. the nomenclature one is free and really helps.

Thanks for the advices and that's a great story! I'll definitely look into tutoring since I detest lab work so much.
