Bill ,
Good luck for your interview next week. Be yourself and every thing will be ok. Be prepare for two scenarios:
1 very friendly ,you don`t feel you are interviewed (I am not the person who will interview you ,I only ask you some questions before the real interview ,,,,,,,,,,very tricky ,because you feel more relax and you can make mistakes. Have your answers very well prepared ,do not improve there )
2 very formal ,any smile , only dental questions (with many details about your school : what did you study in your university at the prosthetics? Did you see something else than extractions? ,,,,,,,,,, How many crowns did you prepare in the university?

Good luck again!

Hey Bill

I've read your posts so far and as a former FTD who'd done the AEGD/Masters/Adv Standing... here's my two cents:

Just be yourself and don't be so nervous. AEGD Program Directors want a resident who would work well with other residents and staff even under stress. Always be intrigued and willing to learn many new "skills" whilst in the program. For example, tell them what area of general dentistry that you are most interested (especially good if you have a portfolio of your previous work) and what area that you'd like to learn e.g. implants?). Anyway, be prepared to talk on your own initiative.

As long as you are sincere, most people will see that and that you are a very amiable person to work with.

Interview next week, eh? Good luck!

Cheers,

Hi Bill,

Hello
I am new to this forum. First of all I want to wish you good luck for the program. I want to ask few things. I have done part I with 93 and TOEFL iBT with 102. I am planing to take part II in a month or two so I will be arriving US next month.
1) What are the good scores to get selected in GPR or AGED prgrammes. I haven't applied any where as I was told by my seniors and friends that the only way to get US licence is to do two or three years DDS, which I want to avoid.
2)Do they pay in such programmes. Can I apply on the basis of part I only or I have to wait for my part II score and whats the best time to apply.
3) Where can I find a list of programmes that can help me in getting US licence.
3) Are there any visa/residency requirements for such programmes. I am currently on B2 visa, but I am expecting to get green card through my parents in an year or so.
You guys seem to have plenty of experience and I would apprecite if you can share some of it with me.
Regards.

LUCUS! thanks for the info... what hotel did you went to? ist near the school? if you can suggest one pls. do thanks.

Your best bet would be www.priceline.com I got mine for total of $50.

Folks!! Now an important question. What are the prospects or likelyhood of getting license after doing that course? I emailed NYStateBoard, and they gave a kind of confusing answer.

here is what it says according to the state law:

http://www.op.nysed.gov/dentlic.htm

If you completed a program of dental education in an unregistered and unaccredited foreign dental school, you must complete not less than two academic years of study satisfactory to the Department in a registered or accredited dental school program including such subjects as may be necessary for certification by such registered or accredited school that you have achieved the level of knowledge and clinical proficiency expected of a graduate of the school. It is a fact that the AEGD Program meets this standard of law. The state will not give you a direct answer because they don't want this pathway to be saturated with FTDs as there are so many people from other countries residing in the state of New York, This is there way of "controling" the issue. I spoke with the State board for dentistry and they were stand offish as well but read the law for yourself, That is why Rochester is the only program of its kind , other then Advanced Standing programs at the 4 universities in NY. If you have questions about acceptable programs, contact the New York State Board for Dentistry by e-mail at [email protected], by phone at 518-474-3817 ext. 550 or by fax at 518-473-6995.

In addition to the professional education requirement, every applicant for dental licensure or a limited permit must complete coursework or training in the identification and reporting of child abuse in accordance with Section 6507(3)(a) of the Education Law. You must submit a certificate of completion from an approved provider or file a certification of exemption before a New York State license or permit can be issued. See additional information and a list of approved providers for this training. This information can also be requested by calling 518-474-3817 ext. 570. You may be eligible for exemption from the training if you can document, to the satisfaction of the Department, that your practice does not involve professional contact with persons under the age of 18 and that you do not have contact with persons 18 or older with a handicapping condition who reside in a residential care school or facility.

You must also complete approved coursework or training appropriate to your practice regarding infection control and barrier precautions in accordance with Section 6505-b of the Education Law, including engineering and work practice controls, to prevent the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis b virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice. Graduates from New York State dentistry programs after September 1, 1993 are credited with having completed this coursework as part of their dentistry program. All other applicants must submit an attestation of compliance with or exemption from the infection control coursework requirement (Form 1IC) within 90 days of your date of licensure. Form 1IC will be sent to you along with your license. See additional information and a list of approved providers of this training. This information can also be requested by calling 518-474-3817 ext. 570.

Accredited Dental Programs
For information about accredited dental programs in the United States or Canada, contact the American Dental Association, 211 E. Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 by phone at 312-440-2500, by fax at 312-440-7494 or check their Web site at www.ada.org or contact the State Board for Dentistry (see Contact Information).

Now as per the University of Rochester statement , so you see how the program matches the states requirement, It reads :

UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER
EASTMAN DEPARTMENT OF DENTISTRY
DIVISION OF GENERAL DENTISTRY

Overview / Didactic Courses and Lectures / Clinical Activities/ Rotations / Graduate Degree Programs / Faculty Research Interest

I. OVERVIEW

The University of Rochester Eastman Department of Dentistry offers a one and two year advanced education in General Dentistry AEGD Program. These programs are approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and after completion the participants receive a certificate. For those who are enrolled in the two-year program and who have an interest to enter a career involving teaching or research, this program can be integrated with research training. The research program at the University of Rochester includes a Master of Science (major in dental science) and Master of Public Health. The Ph.D. program is in one of the basic biomedical sciences. Fellowships supported by the National Institute of Dental Research are available to those who plan a career primarily in research and teaching.

Enclosed is an application packet and information which describes training opportu¬nities at University of Rochester Eastman Dental Center. We look forward to receiving your application.

Hospitals can only consider applications from graduates of foreign dental schools that are eligible for New York State licensure.how I understand this , is they won't accept you to thier program if you are not eligible. Current policy requires that the candi¬date has a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree from an American Dental Association accredited dental school. Unfortunately, this is not possible for dentists trained outside of North America. However, you may apply to the International Dental Postgraduate Program in General Dentistry at Eastman Dental Center. There is a $100.00 application fee to apply.

Ok so let us all give our thoughts to this, If anyone knows anything different please post your thoughts or facts , thank you -BILL

can u tell me what did they require from u. as of part 1 & 2.how can we increase our chances of getting in these programs, if u can help.

well as I see it they never said you need either but it was better if you did, what is happening today in the FTD community is we are seing more and more of us going into the other pathways that are set up for us , so having part1 and part2 will only benefit your situation and besides I think we should meet these standards . -Bill
