I am asking this for my girlfriend. She is currently pursuing a degree in PT and with research it seams that what used to be obtained with a bachelors now requires a doctorate. Well we currently live in northern Va, and she has an associates in science and has started at George Mason University and they did not have a PT program per say but the counselor said they have an integrated studies degree that will put her on the path to going to a graduate school for the PT degree. Anyway she is going to school and everything but she is getting discourage because she said it seems as though these courses she is taking doesnt really pertain to the field of interest. She feels as though she would be better off going to a college that actually offers a PT program so she is really studying the particular field. The problem is the closest college that offers a PT program is over an hour away. She is now considering switching fields to something like radiology or sonography maybe a degree/career she could get quicker and make decent money. She is really smart and gets good grades even under pressure but it seems like these degrees are so far away. HELP. 🙂 We are approaching our 30's and want to start our lives Marriage/Children but not without making enough to support a decent life and this degree seems to be putting everything on hold.

Thanks

In order to get into a DPT program, she needs a bachelor's degree, or plan to have her bachelor's degree before starting PT school. The bachelor degree can be in whatever major she wants, as long as she takes the courses that are prerequisites to apply to physical therapy school (usually Bio, Chem, Anatomy, Physiology, Physics, etc). Lots of pre-PT students get their bachelor's in kinesiology or exercise science, but that is not necessary. Once getting a bachelor's degree, PT school is usually around 3 years.
