There were dentists from IHS and VA came to our school to recruit. I understand of course they paint a rosy picture for their department.

However, they do offer 130-150G salary and if you give them 30 years, you got a nice pension with 30 days of vacation and no practice to worry about.

Do most people go into private practice solely for more autonomy? If you count ALL the benefits(pensions and the whole enchilatas), the government jobs is not a bad gig?

I just wonder what is the catch? There must be a reason they have such a big shortage?

IHS - typically location of your workplace will be somewhere you would not otherwise choose to live. However, some of the places might be fun as a tourist.

VA - the machine of the VA can be really hard to work in unless you have a penchant for loads of red tape. However, at it's best the VA can be a source of excellent work experience.

Greetings,

This is my sixth year with the VA (before that I was a professor at UT Memphis) and I intend to make a career out of it. The salary cannot be as high as in private practice but considering no malpratice premiums, low health insurance premiums and paid holidays, I say it is a fair compensation. I truly enjoy giving back to the Vets who give us the freedom we all enjoy today. There is no shortage of dentists in the VA system as there are many applications for a particular position. The problem sometimes is to find qualified applicants who can handle medically compromised patients with very complex restorative needs. DP
