I'm new to sdn. I'm a freshman at umich right now. I was wondering about what a good Gpa is for medical school in terms to a top med. school (like umich med), an average med. school, and a below-average medical school.

I know I should aim for a 4 point, but that's not entirely feasible at a place like umich. I was reading about science Gpa and overall gpa, which carries more wait with the admissions committee? and how important is the gpa and mcat combined. Does it carry more weight than a HS gpa and act/sat when applying to undergrad?

Look at the average GPAs and MCAT scores of the med students at the schools you're interested in to get an idea of what numbers are competitive. Just google it.

4 not feasible? shoot for 3.99

i think the most conservative estimate from pre med advisors that I have heard from or know about suggest a 3.5 gpa and a 30 mcat as your basic 'goal' for being competitive in medical school admissions.

thats basically saying that if you apply broadly and with enough safety/in range schools, you will get accepted on your first attempt with those stats. The 3.5 i am guessing is both overall and science gpa, leaving some wiggle room to interpret but i am pretty convinced that this is the average student(s) gpa and mcat who gets accepted across the board.

do a search on umich undergraduates who got into the med school (mdapps). plenty of 3.8+ grades, and 3 4.0s so its possible.

and overall gpa is more important. sgpa gets looked at afterwards, and it is usualy lower than cgpa.. not for me tho :/

WOLVERINE!

Welcome to Umich.

You can look at average gpas for different medical schools to give yourself a target. However, I would shoot for the best you can possibly do, and focus on getting a well-rounded undergrad experience.

Many students get scared when they think of average gpa and MCAT and decide to focus on the books instead of out of classroom experiences.

and stop by the Career Center to get more advice...
