I know the GPA Scale for the calculation is
A =4
A-=3.7
B+=3.3
B=3 and so on....

But how do classes with different credit hours work. Like at my college, Math and a few of my bio courses were only 1 credit, where as class with lab, most other sciences, were 1.25. So how does that affect the GPA calculation?

I suggest you read through the AMCAS Grade Conversion Guide. They'll walk you through some formulas to give every grade the appropriate weight...

AMCAS weight x Semester Hours = Quality Points

then...

Total Quality Points / Total Semester Hours = AMCAS GPA

Class 1 , Grade = 2.5 , 4 Credits
Class 2 , Grade = 3.0 , 2 Credits

(2.5 x 4) + (3.0 x 2) = GPA points/Credits
4 + 2 = Total Credits

GPA points/credits x Total Credits = GPA

Can't remember (and I should since I just did it this November), but I think AMCAS fills out the number of semester hours, and does the grade conversion and gpa calculation for you automatically. You just need to pick the undergrad school, and then enter the percentage grade and credit weighting EXACTLY how it appears on your transcript. Tab through some fields of the application, and poof...AMCAS fills them in.

Perhaps this is not the best advice, but I let the AMCAS website do everything automatically for me. I studied in Canada, and at my school, there was no differentiation between lecture-only and lecture-lab courses (they are both given a weight of, say, 1.0 credit). Therefore, I was technically short on semester hours for some schools since I didn't receive additional credits from AMCAS for the lab components. However, when I contacted the schools, they said they were aware of the situation; as long as I had taken organic chemistry with a lab component, it didn't matter if I had been give 6, 8 or 6 (lecture) + 2 (lab) credits for the pre-requisite.

I know this probably doesn't really answer your question...but maybe it'll help. All in all, I'm fairly certain that the AMCAS online application automatically calculates your gpa since I certainly never did it by hand 🙂

my college did the same thing. they told us that 1 credit at wellesley = 4 credits according to AMCAS, .5 credits is 2 credit hours while 1.25 is 5 credit hours. this will probably be about the same for your college. so if you want to calculate things yourself, use those numbers. but ask your medical advisory committee at your college (if you have one) if this is the right conversion.

Geez, I'm really counting on AMCAS to do this since my university switched to semesters when I was half way through my BS.
