I'm a bit confused by the GPA Calculations. I thought we were supposed to calculate the different GPAs (science, BCP, nonscience, etc) on our own and report the value on AADSAS.

Does AADSAS do this on its own? How does AADSAS know what "semester hour" value my college gives for each course then? Do they receive this info from the pre-health committees? If so, what happens to people who don't go through committee?

They do it on their own. We report our courses and grades, but they approve them and calculate your slew of GPAs.

You have to put in the number of hours attempted. So, let's say it's a 3.0 credit hour course. That means you attempted 3 hours. If you make an A, you'd get 12 quality points (4.0 for the A times the 3 hours)... then you do all of the rest of the calculations, like normal. 🙂

AADSAS also has there own way of calculating the many GPAs, and it may be different than the way your university does it. Many times, your AADSAS GPA is different than what your university says for your GPA. This is the reason that you send them your transcripts, so they can see your courses, hours taken, grades received, etc.

I'm confused because my college gives one unit of credit for each course (regardless of being a lab course or not); however, non-lab courses are worth 3.3 semester hours, whereas courses w/ labs are worth 4 semester hours.

I guess I interpreted it as "number of credits", which in my case would be "1" for all. Can anyone verify that they are asking for credit hours? Also, are credit hours and semester hours are synonymous?

Yes. Credit hour=semester hours and you would type in "3" for the number of credits if it's a 3 credit hour course, "1" for a lab, etc.

on that note, are you required to list the lab sections separately? I was under the impression that since the "credit hours" of courses with labs are 4 vs those without are 3.3 credit hours, wouldn't dental schools know which courses had labs and which didn't? <---- Just for my specific case!!!

instead of...
General Chemistry I
Credit hours: 3
General Chemistry I Lab

It's however it's listed on your transcript. If they're together then list it all as one course. If they are listed separately then list them separately. I.e. I had a physics course with a lab but it was listed as 1 class for 5 credit hours so it went into AADSAS as 1 class. I also had (pretty much all other science) classes listed separately like organic chem - 3 hours, and organic chem lab - 1 hour. Those were put into AADSAS as 2 separate classes. They basically want to be able to look at what you've put in on the portal and match it to what your transcript says so keep it as simple as possible. Copy the transcript as it is. 🙂
