Dear SDN,
i'm confused as to the process of submitting grades when applying to MSTPs. i've heard about the 'AMCAS' gpa, which may or may not be different from your college's gpa (A+s changed to As, etc). i'm wondering who makes these calculations and when. when you submit your application, does it include your actual transcript (with your grades pre-AMCASing)? it would be comforting to know that someone who is making a decision will see an A+ on the transcript, even if it is not represented in your calculated GPA. ...though i guess the opposite applies to a B-.

sorry for asking just a logistic question

Your grades will be considered from your AMCAS primary application. AMCAS is not allowed to forward your transcripts to the medical schools, and the medical school will only want to see them for verification purposes if you are accepted. That being said, on your AMCAS primary to the medical school, your grade will show up as A+, with a 4.0 score (to make everything out of 4.0, not 4.33). So they will see that you got A+ grades if they look.

But, they probably aren't going to care about A vs A+, partially because many schools don't have A+ (my undergrad didn't for example). Most schools aren't going to pay enough attention to look at what coursework you took, but rather they look more broadly at what school you attended, what GPA you received, and what your major was.

PS: B- is still a grade lower than a B and B+ is still higher. AMCAS does use +/- grading, they just trim off the A+.
