So I heard please some one correct me if I'm wrong, that dental school look at 1) the program your taking and the GPA you got, 2) your upward trend as in first year most of us did bad ( i did at least) and 3) they look at the school your from. Some school are known to be much harder then others hence they might lower the gpa requirements for people coming from a more competitive school.

I don't think they'll lower the gpa requirement just like that. If the cutoff is a 2.75, I doubt they'd ignore your 2.7 if you're going to Harvard. We'll maybe if it's Harvard... but I doubt it.

I get the feeling that some schools do take the "competitiveness" of a school into account. However, it's impossible to quantify and may only apply after you've gone through all the cutoffs, and it would only affect things a little. I think the difficult part about relying on a more "competitive" school or program is that it's not quantifiable. I've got a lower GPA and got an engineering degree from a school that is ranked in the top 5 for engineering programs each year. A handful of schools seemed to be impressed by it, but most didn't seem to care.

That's not true at all. Dental schools care about overall GPA, science GPA and DAT score. Yes going to Harvard might look better but chances are that all other schools will be viewed similarly. Additionally, if you apply out of state they wont know your home school and if you take classes at a tougher school you might just sit empty handed with a low GPA since the classes were hard. I think its better to take classes at a moderate program where your GPA wont be murdered and thus your chances of going to any dental school increase substantially.

Unfortunately, this isn't true at all.

It is def. true that some schools are known to be much harder than others. However, many dental schools(not all) will look at your overall/science GPAs and DAT first and decide whether they want to interview you or not.

Do they care about where you went to school? Not really.
Does it look better if you get 3.9 from competitive schools? Of course, but 3.9 from any college will still look better than 3.5 from competitive schools.
Do they care whether you have upward trend or downward trend? Not really if your GPA is still higher than 3.4~3.5.

This guy who graduated from my undergraduate (transferred from community college) and did okay on his DAT, is now at NYU dental school. On the other hand, this guy who did really well in his high school and came to my undergraduate with full-ride scholarship with okay stats( DAT 21/20/19) couldn't get into anywhere this cycle.

Therefore, I highly doubt that dental schools care where you went. If you know that your stats aren't high enough, you then defnitely need to let schools know that you are an unique applicant. How? Spend time on your personall essay! 🙂

Good luck
