Heyy everyone.
I've always asked this question but I've never been able to get a straight and consistent answer from anyone, so I'm hoping you guys can help me.

I'm in my last semester of sophomore year and my GPA is not too hot its a 3.0, but I haven't started my pre-reqs yet, if that helps at all. A few semesters back I had a 3.7, but I took some non-science, non-math related classes and I got C's in them, and well you know the rest 🙁

I've moved on from that (sort of ha) and my question is realistically speaking can I ever bring up my GPA back to a 3.7? I cannot see myself doing anything other than medicine, its what I truly want. I just don't know if it's realistic at this point. I'm looking for some insight..any thoughts? 🙄

If you are on your last semester of sophomore with a 3.0 cGPA, it will be pretty hard or somewhat impossible to bring up your GPA to a 3.7 unless you plan to go on to school for at least another 3 years and got As on your remaining classes. GPA is easy to go down; however, it is hard to go up. You probably have two options now. Your first option is to take your prereqs with some other easy classes (Like "Intro to Human Resources"... just an example) and do good them. If you are able to bring your GPA to a 3.3 and score 28+ in the MCAT, you will be a good candidate for DO schools as long you have good LORs, ECs and volunteering etc... Your second option would be: If you are not comfortable with the DO degree, take your prereqs and do good on them. Then do a Special Master Program (SPM) and try to have a 3.7 on it. With a 32+ MCAT with all the other stuff, you will have a decent chance for low tiers MD. Good luck....

3.7 / 32 = low tier MD school? I don't think so...

Thank you for your advice. I'm really disappointed in myself now, but there is nothing I can do to change the past. I really don't have that many credits...I have about 57 credits. But, I will definitely look into those options....what about a post-bacc? Will that help.

With 58 credits and a GPA of 3.0, if you got straight As for the next 62 credits, your cGPA could be about a 3.5. A GPA of 3.5 could be compensated for with an MCAT score of 32 at some allopathic med schools. So it is possible to get yourself into a reasonably competitive range. Is it probable? Likely not, unless you can totally turn around your work ethic and priorities. It can happen, but only you can make it happen.

Demayette has given you some other potential paths to becoming a physician. It isn't over yet for you.

you also would have the upward trend working in your favor. Many people have rough starts, it's all about how much you want it and if you can change your study habits/priorities etc. to pull out As from here on out (my school did the whole +/- system) it's not over until you say it's over 👍 Look into some of the smp/post bacs with direct linkages too. If you haven't started your ECs yet either make sure you get on that. You potentially have two years to get involved with a few things and keep those up until you graduate and/or beyond up until you apply...Longevity is always a good thing.

You also have time to utilize summer school if that is an option for you instead of taking an additional year of classes...SMPs are pretty expensive so I would look into seeing if you could knock out some classes over the summer, this would give you way more credits in your gpa. My 6 summer courses + AP credits = 1 academic yr

Thanks Bubbles for the advice and sorry for the extremely late response! I'm going to continue working hard and see where I am in about 2 years and decide where to go from there. Either a SMP or some type of post-bacc? maybe? Don't know. I've been volunteering at a hospital since HS, so thats as much volunteer work as I have, but I'm looking some other options as well. I really appreciate the advice! I know I can do it 🙂
